Michael Phelps vs. Great White Shark

With Shark Week rapidly approaching, the anticipated race which includes Phelps (+500) vs. a Great White Shark (-800) in a 100 meter race has already taken place and people have been sworn to secrecy on the results. That being said,,,,, does anyone have any of this so called "secret" information they would like to share with those of us here on Covers. I've read up on it quite a bit and have come up with my personal opinion, but I would like to see what others think.

Top speed of an average great white = 25 mph
Phelps top speed ever recorded = peaked at almost 6 mph

So, with that knowledge, and utilizing my math skills I learned in first grade, and if I carry the 2.....

Phelps could be 3/4 of the way into the "race" and still get beat by the shark. So, you know there's going to be something like the shark gets held back or has to start on land or something.

I suggest (much like I will) enjoy the "race", enjoy shark week, save your money and wait 2 weeks for football to start.

30 mph vertically when they hunt. GW wont be hunting.

Whites migrating distance speed is just over 2 mph.

100 meters is 328 feet Way beyond speed burst attack distance for Jaws.

how is this race supposed to be set up?  obviously, phelps can't come close to winning a real race and -800 is a gift.  but if there is some bullshit involved or the shark decides to just do some other sh*t in the middle of the race, then i guess you could lose.

That's why there's a line on the race. By GW shark studies Phelps wins this race or it's right to the wire.

I can't believe there's a line on this. I smell a 5000 word Scal write-up coming.

Great whites don't exist in any captivity on the planet. Promise ya phelps won't even be in the same country code. What I'm guessing is they'll run a split screen of a random tagged shark swimming at a migratory pace for 100 meters and Phelps in a pool swimming @ his 100 meter pace. Be damned if Phelps loses.

We were in open water, but we did not have a shark literally next to me swimming,” he says. When it was time for his competition’s turn, “The challenge of trying to get a white to swim in a straight line was difficult, because when a white attacks a seal on the surface they come from under the surface to build speed to be able to get that natural breach that we all see from great whites. But I think with some of the tests that we were running out there on the boat, we were able to see what they can do. It’s a speed burst that they reach up to 25 mph, so in a 100-meter race, they might be swimming at 16 mph. Don’t look at me to try to figure out formulas, but I know we have people that are smart enough to be able to figure the formulas out to then project the speed that they would swim over the course of 100 meters. That’s what we were able to do, and it was crazy — just watching them naturally breach and then watching them come down with the amount of force that they have when they are going to see what something is.”

Harpoon it in the A$$ and I bet you get more than just a  "speedburst of 25mph".....

Even "swimming at 16 mph", Phelps still gets his A$$ whupped....

All the data is on a tracking devices they tag White's with to chart their migration patterns. Distance. speed, depth temp, deviation feed stops,..etc. There's no other possible way to determine the 328 ft 100 meter straight line avg speed formula. and no way some dude is standing on the deck of a boat with a stop watch watching that fish swim figure eights. 

The fastest documented migration speed is 3mp, some out there may be a little quicker. My guess how this plays out. No way in hell take the shark @ -. 700. 16 mph cruising on any shark in a 100 meter straight line is ridiculous. Mako or migrating whale shark yes.

While he didn't beat the hammerhead, which swam the distance (50 meters) in 15.1 seconds,( vs Phelps 18.7 seconds) he was able to beat the reef shark by 0.2 seconds, swimming at 6 miles an hour.

Next was the Great White:

Phelps swam the 100 meters in 38.1 seconds, while the great white shark did the same length in 36.1 seconds, beating Phelps by two seconds.

At the start of the race, Phelps reached a speed of 8.8 miles an hour, swimming faster than the shark, but then the shark took the lead at the 25-meter mark, and Phelps was unable to overcome the creature's lead.

Remember you don't have to beat the shark,just the guy swimming next to you...........
