Is sports betting game of skill or chance?

Question

I had a good question from a avid sports bettor the other day that I would like some feedback on. I am novice and didnt know how to answer him.

The question was is sports betting chance or skill and why?

There are times I can generate a real good ROI being a novice but in the long run I fall short.

How do the pros do it?

What are all the data that they look at to determine their bets that gives them the skill advantage?

Why does it have to be "or"?  IMO it&#x27;s both. Same as poker and horse racing. Less risky then the lottery where that&#x27;s all chance and no skill. You control what you invest and the chance is what comes next. Watch sports to gain your data, like stock traders watch the market. Then expect the unexpected.  Pick 3% more winners then losers.

If there are pros around here, they&#x27;re not telling.........But, if you notice, some of the better cappers tend to follow similar rules:They don&#x27;t bet a ton of games. It would be impossible to come up with a number for every game given all the variables (injuries, weather, ATS record, revenge game, Coach/OC/DC, etc), so a select few are chosen, because they think they have a "read" or "angle" on said games.They bet what they know. Most cappers, I won&#x27;t say "specialize", but tend to focus on a league or teams they are comfortable with. Scalabrine will come up with a few games, and list at least 5 reasons he is betting what he&#x27;s betting. DU4L will have bets that moves on a scale of Large Bets and Smaller Bets. Scal is a Jersey guy, is wired on NY, certain coaches (he&#x27;s got Purdue OVER 3-1/2 which is looking good), and the occasional Tulane/SMU thing. But only because he follows these goofballs.Remember, you don&#x27;t need big names. You won&#x27;t impress me if you pick the Ohio State/Michigan game. But, you nail Coastal Carolina vs. Rhode Island, now you have my attention. Just let your fellow bettors know what you know. Share. That way, we all win.They set limits. You should never bet with money you can&#x27;t afford to lose financially or emotionally. You can&#x27;t go into a bet thinking "If I win this, I&#x27;m gonna get a new set of snow tires" or whatever.They don&#x27;t chase. Never follow or pay no mind to ANY capper that says "I lost my College GOY, but I&#x27;ve got a blockbuster NFL game for Sunday!"This is not The Gospel, and are not the stone tablets. As long as you aren&#x27;t flipping a coin to make your picks, it is skill.  But if you bet a huge percentage of your bankroll every pick, then luck becomes more important, because luck controls your short term success.  Even if you pick 60% winners, it is likely you go 0-5 at some point, and if you bet big then your bankroll is gone.

Hawk nailed a few things.Less is more as he said. I tend to believe the NFL number and O/U lines are pretty much nailed by the books. Find value in the player props and injury details or mistakes. Or anything else. 3 of my examples from last week. 2 nice and 1 not so much. I am clearly not a "pro" nor do I know what a pro is or how they do it. As you asked.Colts Thursday night couldn&#x27;t dress an entire squad as the Inactive Roster was at the maximum. Stud rookie LB Leonard was a game time decision but was "active" as was CB Hairston but both were not dressing. Went 3 - 0 - 1 on 2 player props , the first half and game. Minn at Philly O/U 48.5 and game line 3.5 yet the Minn over/under was 20.5 and Phil O/U 26.0. Clearly an error in the Minn line. Nailed that by a late FGMy other bet was Denver -1 because......well it&#x27;s the Jets. Guess what happened. That&#x27;s not handicapping now is it?All posted somewhere in the nfl forum.

A point-spread is the Creation of a Man and thus can be Defeated.It&#x27;s not like a Roulette Wheel and the -5.25 advantage,every game is a Battlefield so pick&amp;choose your fights. It&#x27;s both.Although The Hawk gave this Thread the best basic advice there is, THE most important thing any gambler should remember that  follows...For some reason gamblers assume it&#x27;s always "ME against THE BOOKIE".  Wrong.  It&#x27;s YOU against YOURSELF.If you don&#x27;t have any self discipline then you ARE doomed.  Don&#x27;t believe me? I think it matters at what point your at in your betting career...if you are years in and still up and going then yeah thats skill...the main thing tho is knowing how to control your picks and knowing when is the right time to make a play...but if you have been winning for a while then no one can tell you its pure luck...no one. Its like a jump shot... you make one or two in a game...maybe luck...make 5 threes for 5 games straight...that is skill. So pretty much, its both

If you believe you are novice. Then that itself is skill most are novices and amateurs in this endeavour they don't bet to pay the rent they bet to enhance the game experience while watching it. Whether a dollar gentlemen's bet or a 10,000 high roller window. The money shouldn't be the rent.

If you win someone lost and if you lost someone won the money , or whatever commodity an actor lost a bet went on Letterman with combat boots and a dress plugging an off cable series 24.

If you win a great deal of money on a small wager that represents how many in the pool lost that bet. See horse racing pick 4 cards.

The focus in thought is why am I investing in this endeavor. I try to focus on ideal bets but I losses 1-5 in a day in nba. Okay I won 5-0 earlier in the month same focus facing the same numbers using the same algorithm 'dept that day no one injured during the game and the 1-5 three starters were game time injuries. So really we gain an edge capping but unless you have some clavoyance or working crystal ball everyone needs luck at times.

In poker a good rule of thumb is if you can not find the sucker at the table then it&#x27;s you. Or if you are the 100th best pokerplayer in the world. And you are playing against the top8 in a nine seater you will be slaughtered without some luck.
