I’m confused on the process of becoming an a-hole. Hopefully some of you who are experts on the subject can explain it to me.
What does it take to get to a mental state where you completely disregard and disrespect people? At what point do you stop caring? Are you born a jerk or does something happen that turns you into one? Is there a transition phase or is it an instant transformation?
Take Ben Roethlisberger, for example. This week Sports Illustrated shed the light on the Steelers quarterback’s arrogant persona. He’s been such a prick around Pittsburgh that he’s actually alienated a large part of one the most passionate fan bases in the league. According to S.I., Roethlisberger often tries to skip out on his tab, tips poorly or not at all and moaned about paying a $5 cover charge, asking “Do you know who I am?”
Not that I’m someone, but, even if I was, I can’t ever imagine asking someone if they knew who I was in an arrogant tone.
S.I.com also made an interesting point in this blog. Writer David Epstein spoke to a doctor who specializes in head injuries. The doctor says Roethlisberger’s actions are consistent with others who suffered injuries to the frontal lobe of the brain.
Whatever the reason, reading about Roethlisberger’s behavior disgusts me. We all know people like this, but for the life of me I can’t figure them out.
How in the world do become an a-hole?

He lives in my town (or township, as we have out here), and damn near everyone has an odd Ben story. It's not so much that he's a jerk. He's just kind of weird.

I read stories about him being a real asshole in college during his first year with Pittsburgh, so I don't think the head injuries have anything to do with it.
Some people are just born jerks.
