Anybody Vacation In New Orleans/French Quarter

Thinking of heading down there for a trip later this summer.....curious if anyone has been there, and if it is worth doing.

Heard a bunch about the crime, but tourism is still a big deal there....anybody know anything?

There was a thread awhile back about this. Long vet posters had really positive things to say about that area. I've always wanted to visit at some point. 

Its great! Went for New Years, and the Sugar bowl a couple years ago, and had a blast. Bourban Street can get a little greasy, and don't veer off the major tourist areas as it can get sketchy

At one time New Orleans had the Highest Murder rate and the Highest Rate of Police Corruption at the same time. The Flood may of solved some of that though, Apres de Deluge. 

Down South it's amazing how quickly a beautiful part of a city can be so close to serious trouble. Was out in postcard Savannah one time.

I cannot believe that the University of Montana took the cash to go and play Washington in the fall.....horrible decision, financially motivated because the retired president of the university ran the place into the ground. Enrollment way down, and the school is running big deficits.....that is why they didn't fire Stitt and buy out his contract last season.

Coach Peterson at UW is a UC Davis alum...Griz used to beat up on them every year back in the late 80s and 90's...hope he doesn't hold a grudge. I will say that UW laying anything under 30 is a gift...UM goes 3 and out faster than anyone in the nation, and they have not named a QB as of yet, with HC Stitt on the road looking for transfers as we speak. This is likely another ugly year for the Griz, and Browning vs that secondary will look like 7 on 7 passing drills.

In any case, I was thinking of heading down to N.O. with the wife and couple of her friends. I saw that there is a casino and some of the greatest food in the world there....I was looking at The Intercontinental for lodging, but haven't decided. If things tend to get sketchy quickly, then maybe going high end is worth the cash.

In any case, there are a few museums and clubs I want to hit, so it  might be fun for a country boy.

As for the politics, they always give way to football.   Of course that Trump futures bet last fall was pretty nice.....but it is time for kickoff!!!! 

The French Quarter is really cool but you definitely don't want to venture off the beaten path. Great restaurants in New Orleans. And the people are nice but it's like going anywhere you're not familiar with, use common sense and don't draw attention to yourself.

I live about two hors away, visit about once a year.you want to stay close to the quarter because parking is a nightmare.

It's been a few years, but we had a great time down there. We went down a week before Fat Tuesday and it was in full swing.Our hotel was a few blocks from Bourbon St and we walked down there nightly. Walked down to Harrah's Casino one night and lost a few dollars, but it was fun. Had one issue the first night with a panhandler, but other than that, all was good. Great food everywhere we ate

Sounds like that is the plan...stay within walking distance to the French quarter.....no driving...Uber from the airport to hotel.

Currently here for work. Harrahs is nice casino. Also plenty of good food all over. Always a festival or event of some sort going on---especially if you like music. And of course, plenty of shopping for the wife--lots of galleries and antiques, etc. 

As far as parking goes. Couple places down on the river walk are okay. But if you plan to gamble just park at Harrahs and can park for free. Then walk around after sun goes down and it is cooler. That is what I always do.
