was listening to one of those consumer advocate ppl on the radio recently, and he said every time it goes up $1/barrel, the consumer doesn't really feel the effect until 2-3 weeks later... if thats true, gas pump prices will be about $6 by 7/4.

this is a really dumb question, but i have never understood barrel prices, who sets them?  When they say 150 per barrel, is that from one generic source?  like the price of a stock?  people own oil companies can charge whatever they want i thought, but these generic prices make no sense to me...yes i am an idiot when it comes to this

    It isnt greed.

It is supply and demand fellas.

Until we either reduce demand or increase supply, we are only going to be paying more and more and more.

WSC- Not trying to bet a smartass, but how does supply and demand explain an $11 spike in 1 day? Did all the SUV's in the world fill up at once? These fluctuations do not seem to have anything to do with S&D. I heard it was related to something the Isreali VP might have said about Iran. To me, S&D would mean STEADY increases or decreases, not these massive spikes. It's people trying to make a quick buck.

To me, S&D would mean STEADY increases or decreases, not these massive spikes. It's people trying to make a quick buck.

It's impossible to know who to believe. I've been reading over the last couple weeks how demand has gone down slightly, yet one guy speculates & all hell breaks loose. Even if I ride my bike or walk  everywhere it does me little good as the price of EVERYTHING goes up because of oil prices.

    Supply and demand is fluid.

Also keep in mind that we are a MARKET economy which is controlled by supposed PURE supply and demand. OPEC who controls output is an ologopoly, that skews the supply/demand curve. Since OPEC dictates supply outside market influences, the only way to break an ologopoly is to crush demand..like we did when Carter was in office.

You either have to push out an ologopoly by excess supply or by smashing demand.

The market is never perfect at a point in time, we are human and have emotions..so the true supply and demand cannot be determined from one day move in the price of oil.

this thread is better for this...

    flex-fuels!

i'd rather send my dollars to a farmer in iowa than some radical fundie saudi.

read about flex fuels, brazil went from oil based fuels to flex fuels (sugar mostly) in less than two decades, even if we just cut 50% of refined oil fuel usage it was cause the demand to go down and cheaper prices.  this isnt a radical idea, dont listen to the big oil company's research and lobbying, its obvious theyre going to protect themselves and shit on every alternative energy idea.

    bsforsale,

Scratch below the surface and you might change your tune.

Did you know that the government is subsidizing the US farmer to make ethanol? And in doing so farmers are not producing other crops and this is creating agricultural inflation? So we are making ethanol and in doing so the price of other items are going up up up..

Also our government is taxing Brazilian imports of ethanol by 100% so our farmers can compete. That is stupid. We are obviously unable to produce ethanol cost effectively, it is a bad idea and it is hurting the country more than helping.

Yes, sounds good on paper but do some more digging and you will see a ton of negatives about this. You might save some money on gas, but the price of everything else increases. Also, if you are converned about the enviornment and natural resources, the production of ethanol takes a lot of water and uses a lot of energy to make the stuff. It burns cleaner, but its production makes that point useless.

If we allow gas to get to 10 bucks a gallon and do nothing about it, then the joke is already on us.

I have a few issues/comments with this thread. This isn't directed to any poster... I'm just stating what I know... or feel that is correct based on events since 2001.

First of all... George Bush is or should be accountable for all of this. If you say he shouldn't then there's something wrong with you. Again, not in any specific order... but here are the events.

You have some imbecile putting a white substance in first class letters and throwing them in mailboxes... we're going to call this "Anthrax" and a major scare to our society. Yet, we "mysteriously" haven't found this person?

You have the Twin Towers fall... in N.Y. because of an aircraft that flew directly into the building.

You have this war in which we had to mysteriously invade this country because of "weapons of mass destruction" and/or possibly had to invade because we're irrate and pissed off because innocent people were killed at ground zero. Nice plot. Come to find out... we have several thousands of our own people dead... (futhermore dead) and we're still searching for these weapons of mass destruction.

While all of this BS is going on.. gas prices are again... "mysteriously" creeping upward. Cowlin Powell resigns... "mysteriously" maybe he knew the truth involved with all the BS that was going on? Didn't want to be a part of it?

Did I mention through all of this... gas prices are climbing upward? Oh yes, I did... I forgot. Not to pay for the war right? Not at all? Just use our US Tax Dollars? That should be enough, right? Not exactly.

George Bush was a C.E.O. of an energy company back in the 70's wasn't he? He would be the one to figure out a solution, correct? I mean... that's his trade. He would know it better than anyone... yet has never made a "direct" statement indicating what we should do about high gas prices? All he ever said... "We need a better economy. It should help the economy." What will help George W? What the Fu#$ are you talking about? Speak English! Since George is good with energy... I would only assume he would know what stocks to choose from. It's absolutely incredible that the "energy" portion of stocks are sky rocketing... but your basic... more simple... easy solution stocks... are suffering? The Dow keeps on climbing on these days... yet you would only assume it's going to crash?

True or false... 8% off all citizens on the USA are EXTREMELY WEALTHY? Meaning... their assets would offset their debt. You answer.

True or false... 96% of all citizens owe $1.00 or more to somebody? You can answer anytime....

So even if you factored in 30% of the population lives a decent life. Where they have no worries... etc. 30% of us control the stock market?  96% of people are in debt though.... so why are they even buying stocks?  Shouldn't they be getting out of debt first? My point is... all of this we are witnessing today... on June 6, 2008... has to be fixed. The math doesn't add up.

It's an absolute shame for us to live our lives like this. $5.00 for a gallon of gas? I believe we have more reserves than "they" want you to know. I also believe they as a president of the USA you better tell your people exactly WTF is going on. Not in any speech has George Bush explained how we're going to handle this. Every night that clown shouldn't even be able to sleep at night because our country is failing!!!! When you give your heart to society... and to something you believe in... you get emotional... you hurt inside... you show sometimes desperation. George Bush doesn't act desperate... he doesn't get emotional... he doesn't care about you or I... yet somehow he was voted in. When you care about your job... or your position... you give out answers... you explain what you are going to do or about to do. All he talked about was WAR!!! Weapons of Mass Destruction!!! WHAT A CROCK of SH#$!!!! There comes a time in your life... when you say... if the gambling world is fixed... anything can or will be fixed.... until someone stops it. But how do you stop it... if it's your own president? You can't. Only God can...

This simply can't be repaired. Auto makers were ready to make major changes... and for some reason... did not get the OK from the government. Why didn't they get the ok? Because of greed... all this crude oil. All of this money is going into someone's pocket. This has nothing to do with low supply and high demand. The government knows everything... they knew what could happen when the first Hummer.. Navigator... any SUV came out. They knew how many people existed...

My father worked for Standard Oil back in 1975... he drove a tanker... double tanker to be exact. Worked is way up in the company until found a better position with another company in the early 80's. A major supervisor from Standard Oil/Amoco was my dad's friend... and one night they were drunk... went out drinking... and this supervisor opened up and said... "Richard... we could practically give gasoline out to the people for free we've got so much of it... and little overhead." Now yes, it was around the early 80's but...  what was a gallon of gas back then? $0.75 cents? I don't know... I actually don't remember? But my point is... he said they could give it out for free. Now, some people know that I'm involved with the tanning industry... and I will let the cat out of the bag... my cost on a bronzing session costs me around $0.21 cents to run the bed in 2008. That cost includes electricity, sanitizing solution, and lamp usage. But my retail price is $8.00 a walk in. Look at the profit I'm making. Sure you can get it cheaper... but that's my retail price... and that's not inflated. That's the going price. Could I come down? Absolutely... In fact... I honestly wouldn't turn anyone away... even if they offered me $3.00

That's why this entire thing to me is BS. Our president isn't telling the truth. There's absolutely no excuse for a gallon of gas to be over $2.00.... absolutely no reason. I'm not saying our country is better than anyone elses... but damn it... that's what everyone thought in the 80's and early 90's. Don't mess with the U.S...

We have the ability... to have already known this. (gas problem) Pardon my grammar... but Bush's tenure is almost over... and by far he is the worse president of all time... and he came into office with such heavy positive momentum... and really fu#$ed us all. All he had to do... was run a simple game plan. He didn't want that... he wanted more power and he failed... and it crippled us.

money shot, you are right on. This is just another scam. One big cluster fuck, like Enron, the mortgage scams. Some assholes are gonna come down hard for this. I would not be surprised if this asshole that said oil would be $150/barrel by July 4th didn't stand to profit millions of the prices did go up. Why would he say this? Big Oil and Detroit have stood in the way of any alternative energy sources because they stand to continue to profit if it is the same-ole, same-ole. Congress needs to step in and do something before it is too late.

Looks like Bush's Oil buddies are making one last, big cash grab while they can.  It's going to be an expensive half dozen months until he is finally gone.
