That's a relevant point about Gilbert being picked higher than 85th. Let's just sit back and watch the show!
It just seems really tough to figure out qbs from college to pros.
You got guys starting in NFL from the MAAC for God's sake. BYU was a qb factory back in the day, and lastly, Tom Brady being picked in the 6th round........................
I will continue to scratch my head..................and check out this forum!

The difficulty is that most prolific college QBs are playing in spread offenses, so it's difficult for scouts to predict how their skills will translate to the pro game where the QBs are usually under center.

Over-rated: Iowa. They should have lost 4 games last year, the ball bounced their way..... They lost some great LB's, O linemen, a solid DB, and Wengher got his GF pregnant, and hasn't been to practice for over a week or two. Sure, they still have Hampton and Robinson, but these things are distractions.
Under-rated. Wisconsin. Clay is a BEAST, Tolzien played well at the end, almost entire O unit is back and the coaching is solid.

i actually like Gilbert, and i think he will be better than Colt... they didn't lose much when they lost Colt... he can tear up the Rice's and Baylor's of the world, but that guy was as overrated as they come...
the reason Texas is overrated is the same reason they always are... their D is better than advertised, but Mack Brown doesn't have a clue when it comes to offense... the Big 12 is perennially overrated, so they build up big numbers against the shittiest defenses in college football, only to suck it up against any respectable defense late in the season (OU, Texas, any bowl team)...
they are and will be overrated, despite the fact they will most likely have improved QB play this year...

you obviously know nothing about this Texas football team, our QB Garrett Gilbert and the talent and coaching of our defense. Texas reloads. We will be in hunt for the NC. You will see.

that's right, gilbert will be better than mccoy. mccoy overachieved at Texas. he was a coaches son with a positive attitude. mccoy was a winner with some reasonable talent. gilbert has the potential to be a tom brady. he has mccoys leadership and chris simms arm. he may not lead texas to a nc this year, but by the time he has done at texas (which will probably be after the 2011 season) he will lead texas to a nc. take it to the bank.

i think neb is right where they should be, very easily could have went 12-2 or even 13-1 last year, losing suh is huge but return a bunch on defense and all skill postions on offense which has to mean with another year playing together the o has to improve. zac lee was hurt almost all last yr and was finally healthy against arizona and looked how that turned out! another year of experince for him and he might not be great but will be servicable. obviously im a homer also but top 10 is probably deserved with our weak schedule also to keep in mind

Nothing like comparing apple and oranges to drive home a point.
Colt dropped down to almost the 4th round in the NFL draft because of his size (or lack thereof) 6'1" - 215, where Gilbert is a much more of a proto-typical 6'4" - 220 with a stronger arm.
No doubt that Colt had a fantastic college career and, in so doing, accumulated very impressive stats. But one does not necessarily have to surpass Colt's stats to be a better QB. If that's the case then Max Hall from BYU is a better QB than CM because he had better stats last season, or Blaine Gabbert because he threw for more yards. That's ridiculous Stats are certainly a good indicator, but they do not tell the whole story. As for Gilbert's lack of stats, even superstars like CM had to start somewhere. So too is it with Gilbert.
But the stats you do use are from one game in which Gilbert came off the bench in an emergency backup roll against the #1 defense in all of college football, and nearly pulled off the unthinkable. And the fumble happen because LT Adam Ultoski failed to block Eryk Anders, which gave Anders a clean shot to Gilbert's blind side. That certainly wasn't Gilbert's fault. Had CM taken that shot he'd probably still be on the turf.
When CM faced good defenses last season he didn't fare much better than Gilbert. He was 21-41 for 127 yards with 1 TD, 1 pick and at least 1 lost fumble against Oklahoma, and was 20-36 for 184 yards with no TDs and 3 picks in the Big 12 title game against Nebraska. That's 5 turnovers to only 1 TD, where Gilbert had a 5 to 2 ratio against a better defense. So based on these stats, what would give anyone reason to believe that CM would have done much better than Gilbert against Bama's defense?
IMO Gilbert will be a better QB than McCoy and, accordingly, will be picked higher than 85th in the NFL draft.
damn glad I checked out this thread.... I have learned....all it takes is passing ability to be successful.....running ability......and leadership....doesn't make that much difference in being a great college QB !
ie.....Gilbert has more talent as a passer > so will be better !.........interesting.....>> Bama's D is perhaps more talented .....so will be better!!!.....experience ....especially in BIG games...means nothing ....EUREKA....
* just passed thru Canton......don't know how I missed Jeff George's bust.....crap musta been somewhere......?
* actually the running ability .....AND leadership of Colt is what kept Horns in MANY games.....as ability to run....protect......got worse each year....(Greg Davis' head went further and further up his ass) in fact ....in Colt's last year,....Horns ranked #92 in rushing #97 in sacks allowed #105 in tackles for loss allowed * vs winning teams as always
SO......clearly....the QB position for the Horns.....requires more than just a passer ...unless they find a running game of course
at this stage of the game.....pointless.....except for entertainment / drama purposes... to make wild ass crystal ball projections.....Gilbert MAY indeed be as good ...or even better......right NOW .......we can only say it doesn't appear he will be a liability.....as a 1st year starter...but .....in big games.....or when they can't run.....he damn sure might

Oklahoma was my 1st choice, and after some consideration, I'm going with Oregon as well. I know they won 10 games last year, have a top tier baller in LaM James running behind an o-line that returns every starter, and they possess a veteran, speedy defense led by one of the most underrated d-coordinators in the game. So, just as I didn't say Okla was going to suck, I'm not saying The Ducks will be terrible either. I'm just saying they won't be as good as their pre-season common-consensus Top 11 and favorite to win the PAC-10. Why? To begin with, off the top of my head, I can't think of a team who has to replace more behind center outside of Florida. For some reason, a lot of people seem to think of Masoli was some one year wonder when the fact is he played 9 games in '08, all of them at an elite level, with almost identical stats to those this past season. Masoli's improvisation and elusiveness made him the perfect qb for a Duck team who lacked and still lacks receiving weapons, even more so this year b/c of the loss of Ed Dickson. That ability to make something out of nothing kept the chains moving for Oregon more than anything else. I think it's a stretch to predict either Costa or Thomas being able to provide the same amount of spark and be as effective moving the team down the field. The question then becomes, will they need great qb play, or can they rely on James and the rest of the backs plus that o-line to carry the scoring load? See, I think the thing about Oregon's spread option is it really requires quality athletic ability coupled with astute decision making, in other words, you need very good qb play. We'll find out early on if Costa or Thomas is up to it, and if they're not, I don't see Oregon shutting down their opponents and winning a lot of grind em out slugfests. Even though the Duck defense gets to the qb and can run sideline to sideline, they still give up points to all sorts of different styles (33 vs Purdue, 24 vs Utah in the slop, 41 vs Zona, 51 at Stanford). Spread teams were able to carve up The Duck D and power teams were able to push them around. Now, they should be a year older and a year bigger, but really, how much can they improve? It's not as if they started a bevy of Frosh last year... In the end, Oregon won all of their close games last year, while in their losses, the outcome wasn't in doubt in the final minutes, and I think what put them over the to more than anything was Masoli. I'm even leaning Tenn +9 right now, but well, I have been drinking moonshine tonight. Moonshine aside, I think Stanford (Gerhart gone but o-line back) should pound Oregon again this year, and The Ducks might be a soft, overrated 4-0 at that point.

you obviously know nothing about this Texas football team, our QB Garrett Gilbert and the talent and coaching of our defense. Texas reloads. We will be in hunt for the NC. You will see.
no they won't! Texas has been better the past two years than they are this coming year, and Mack still couldn't get them into a NC game... he is, pure and simple, and crappy gameplanner... they will be lucky to get through the season with only 2 losses... if they do get to the Big 12 championship, they won't get past Nebraska this time...
you need to start facing reality or you will be heart-broken yet again...

The same can be said for Boise???? They are returning 22 starters from last years team...They are nowhere near over rated.
I agree there a good team but there schedule is a joke and thats the only reason they will end up undefeated or 1 loss. I think they loose 2+ games if they have to play sec schedule and at least 1 in big 12 or big 10. But i am a boise hater year after year.

I assume one of those losses your counting last year was when the red raiders came in to Lincoln and dominated them once again.
I just find it hard to believe that Zac Lee can lead a team to a NC. But schedule does set up nice and Neb will have another good year. Gonna suck for yall next year when your playing iowa not iowa st. and Ohio st not colorado.
