Anyone care to mention the two high-ranked SEC teams, Bama and UF?
Obviously the media is going to build these 2 up as elite, title contending juggernauts. But In reality, these 2 teams are fairly worse and much more inexperienced than the teams they fielded last year. Surely not worthy of the preseason hype and recognition they are currently receiving.

LSU is ranked in the top 25, but I havent seen a single magazine, coaches poll, or media poll that picks them higher than 4th in the SEC West. They really are looking like a dog in more games than not.
They're a dog to UNC, and depending on how that goes they might be a home dog to WVU in 3 weeks from then.

My feeling is that without a bowl game to play for, Kiffin would have to be a genius to get them to 9 wins. And I don't think he's a genius.
That being said, he was right and Al Davis was wrong about OffTheMarkus Russell (and NOBODY has stopped the 11-loss string the Raiders are putting together), and he did improve a moribound Tenn. team. Did he burn bridges? I'm sure he did. But if your current girlfriend is Ugly Betty, and Tom Brady's wife says come on over, what do you do?

HAHAHAHAHAHA.....Average offensive line, volatile QB, and on the road. They are gonna get pumped by OSU.

Florida and Bama are still probably the best two teams in the nation, and if not the best two, both are at least in the top 3 or 4. You won't see much drop from either team. In fact I think Bama will be better. They'll be better on both sides of the ball IMO.

The facts as laid out in this article are for the most part accurate. The conclusions rendered based on those facts couldn't be more wrong. This is just your typically writer trying to make conclusions about a team he knows very little about.
In my Bama preseason writeup last year I said then that Bama's second string defense was better than their first, they just didn't have the experience the 1s had. Now that all of those 2s have played a significant number of snaps last year, they are more than ready to step in. As I explained previously, Marcel Dareus who was the NCG MVP and one of the best defensive players in the country, was not even considered a starter last year.
The exception, as the article correctly points out, is the corner position (and that second safety spot that we've already discussed in depth). I will make the assumption that Dre Kirpatrick and BJ Scott are the starters even though that is not a settled issue by any means.
Dre Kirpatrick did play last season as a true freshman in the nickle, dime and quarters packages but was not a starter. BJ Scott could not play because he was redshirting. But here's why corner will not be a weakness.
1. Saban is the best defensive back coach in the country.
2. Unlike Javier Arenas and Kareem Jackson, Kirpatrick and Scott are true shutdown corners. Both are exceptional athletes who were 5* recruits out of HS and both were rated in the top 10 nationally. Both are bigger and faster than Arenas and Jackson.
Now let me ask you this. What teams in college football would take Kirpatrick and Scott over the corners they have right now? The answer is virtually every team in the nation would shit themselves to have these two guys as their starting corners.
3. Moreover, just like pretty much every position on the team, Bama has insane depth at corner. The have true freshmen 5* Demarcus Milner and 4* John Fulton. Both of these guys are true shutdown corners. Fulton has been turning heads since the day he arrive, and may be the best of the bunch.. Then they have 2 juniors who are also outstanding (both 4* recruits) Phelon Jones and Dequan Menzie.
4. The receivers these corners matchup against in practice are better than virtually all the receivers they will face during the year.
5. Bama will have an insane pass rush from their front 7. I may actually feel sorry for some of the offensives that will have to go up against them. Bama's front 7 versus anyone is a mismatch. A marked improvement in pass rush is the biggest difference you will see in Bama's defense, and nothing helps out DBs like a relentless pass rush.
Will Bama's corners make some mistakes? Sure they will. Arenas and Jackson made mistakes too. That just goes with the territory. But the bottom line is Bama is loaded at that position and are being coached by the best in the business. This defense will be better than last year's. Mark it down.

I don't see how Bama can be overrated. They're #1 until they lose. And they will lose with that F'd up schedule.
I've seen Texas mentioned more than any other.......just sayin'

It is just insane for people to question Saban's Secondary. Went it comes to the secondary, from talent evaluation, to recruiting that talent, to developing that talent, to coaching that talent there is nobody better in the business than Saban. If Saban says you can play, that's the end of the discussion.
Sban has run one guy through the process I outlined above, and that was Kareen Jackso (a 4* recruit). He started as a redshirt freshman. Played 3 years and became a 1st round draft pick in the NFL.
He also took Javier Arenas, a 5'9" 3* Shula recruit, and a guy who Shula wouldn't even try at corner, into a 2nd round NFL pick.
Now Saban has 3 5-star CBs and 3 4* CBs, all of whom he recruited and coached, and someone is going to tell me (especially a know-nothing reporter) that the secondary is going to be a weakness? That's utterly ridiculous!!!
this season Tideman!!!

I harp on talent all the time because talent is what wins championships. If you look at the last 10 national champions (Alabama, Florida, LSU. Florida (again), Texas, USC, LSU (again), Ohio State, Miami & Oklahoma), what do they all have in common? They are all annual fixtures in the top 10 recruiting class rankings.
The Longhorns' last 5 recruiting classes, for example, ranked 3, 5, 14, 5 & 5 nationally, and that's why they consistently win. You don't see them winning 10 games one season, and 5 the next. No they win 10 games pretty much every year regardless of who they lose to the NFL and graduation. Why? Because they have stud blue-chip recruits waiting their turn to plug the holes.
Garrett Gilbert was a much higher rated QB than Colt McCoy coming out of high school. In fact Gilbert was 5* recruit, and the #1 rated pro-style QB in the nation. By contrast, Colt McCoy was not a highly recruited 3* prospect. Of course recruiting rankings are not 100% reliable, but when you are adding 20 new 4 and 5-star blue-chippers to your roster every year, there is a very, very good chance that most of those guys will be studs at the college level.
The bottom line is that Alabama, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU and USC recruit the best talent year in and year out, and that is evident by the results on the field.
You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and you may even right that Texas is overrated, but in my opinion there will be very little drop off in overall team results even though Colt is gone and Gilbert is in. And the main reason I say that is because football is the ultimate team sport, and Gilbert will be surrounded by blue-chip talent. Even if he makes a few mistakes, which I have no doubt he will, Texas has enough other talent on the roster to overcome those mistakes. Ultimately, I think Gilbert will be a better QB than McCoy.
Excellent post. Actually, yours are almost the only ones on this thread worth reading. Most of the people on here don't get it.
There was no drop off when Peyton Manning left Tennessee. In fact, they got better & finished the next year as #1. The are numerous examples of this. It happens every year.

Droxside, because nobody has played a game yet the only thing we have to go on are opinions. All of my opinions may turn out to be completely wrong, and yours may prove to be prophetic. So when I'm post an opinion that happens to conflict with yours does not mean in anyway that I don't repsect your opinion. In this case your opinion is probably the opinion of the majority.
As gamblers we are playing a game of odds. My point is simply this. With everything we know about Alabama, Nick Saban and the highly rated recruits that are filling in for the departed, and the depth at those positions, what are the odds that Bama's secondary will be a train wreck (or that there will be a precipitous drop in performance)? For all the reason I have previously elucidated, my answer to that question is "very slim." So if I'm going to place a bet, am I going to bet on "very slim?" Of course not. That's my point in a nutshell.
