National poll championships (1936–present)

The following table contains the National Championships that have been recognized by the final AP or Coaches' Poll. Originally both the AP and Coaches poll champions were crowned after the regular season, but since 1968 and 1974, respectively, both polls crown their champions after the bowl games are completed. The BCS champion is automatically awarded the Coaches' Poll championship. Of the current 120 Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS, formerly Division I-A) schools, only 30 have won at least a share of a national title by the AP or coach's poll. Of these 30 teams, only 18 teams have won multiple titles. Of the 18 teams, only seven have won five or more national titles: Alabama, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Miami, Nebraska, and Ohio State. The years listed in the table below indicate a national championship selection by the AP or Coaches' Poll. The selections are noted with (AP) or (Coaches) when a national champion selection differed between the two polls for that particular season, which has occurred in eleven different seasons since the polls first came to coexist in 1950.

And in 1941 Alabama finished 9-2 under Frank Thomas, but somehow claimed a major selector’s title despite Minnesota’s 8-0 final record.

There is an ongoing investigation at the moment in the University of Alabama compliance department, concerning whether or not Marcel Dareus broke NCAA rules by attending an agent's party in Miami earlier this summer.

Dareus is considered one of top 10 NFL draft prospects for next year and is allegedly one of numerous college football players to have contact with NFL sports agents.

The NCAA is investigating the matter to determine who paid for the transportation to Miami and other expenses while Marcel Darius was there. This comes on the heels of the incident with Maurkice Pouncey of Florida that allegedly accepting $100,000 from an agent's representative prior to last year's Sugar bowl.

Let's all hope that this ends up being nothing and that Marcel Dareus can play all next year and there is no effects on Alabama football program

Saban, who guided the Crimson Tide to the national championship last season, referred to some agents as pimps Wednesday at the annual gathering of members of the news media before the Southeastern Conference football season.

“I don’t know that I would disagree with him about some agents as pimps, but all I know is there are coaches who would also fall in that category,” said Cindrich, who represents the Jets’ D’Brickashaw Ferguson, among others. “I would never tolerate nor permit Saban or any other coach to lump me in that category.

“In terms of him throwing that out there, most agents know what goes on in college programs and what programs are clean or not. You want to find out who has the dirty programs, give immunity and go off the record with agents, and it would be like a cockfight, the last one standing wins.

“There are ways to determine the truth of allegations out there.”

Saban unloaded on agents because the N.C.A.A. and the SEC are investigating allegations that Alabama defensive lineman Marcell Dareus received  improper benefits from an agent. Dareus is projected as a first-round pick in the 2011 N.F.L. draft, but he could lose his college eligibility if the allegations prove to be true.

Saban said the N.F.L. should do a better job of policing agents. If not, he said, perhaps N.F.L. scouts and agents should be banned from campuses and be made to evaluate players some other way.

“We need to create some consequences for people who are not doing the right things here, which starts with the agent, in my opinion, who is entrapping and taking advantage of young people,” Saban said. “There’s a lot of good agents out there that don’t do this stuff.”

There has been a barrage of accusations of agents giving benefits to college players, which has resulted in N.C.A.A. investigations at North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida this week. Southern California was severely sanctioned by the N.C.A.A. because Reggie Bush received improper benefits from an agent.

The N.C.A.A. is investigating an allegation that the former Florida offensive lineman Maurkice Pouncey, a first-round pick of the Steelers, received $100,000 from an agent last December before the Gators’ Sugar Bowl game against Cincinnati. Mike Pouncey, his twin brother, said here that the allegation was false.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting that the N.C.A.A. is investigating whether Georgia players received improper benefits from agents.

“It’s an epidemic, and the epidemic needs to get fixed,” said Urban Meyer, the Florida coach. Meyer said the Gators have security around the team, not to keep away fans, but to keep agents and their representatives from contacting players.

Saban said some of the responsibility falls on the players: "The players are responsible, and the players should have consequences if they do it, but the agent should have consequences. Right now, they have none."

SEC Commissioner Mike Slive, who in his eight years with the league has tried to emphasize cleaning up its sometimes-renegade image, called on the NCAA to consider tweaking the rules relating to player-agent contact, describing the rules-breaking behavior of some agents as "a national problem that calls for a national agent strategy for college athletics."

"Given the surreptitious nature of these matters, it is difficult, if not impossible, for institutions to know what might have taken place," Slive said at SEC football media days.

"NCAA rules make it difficult for student-athletes to seek and obtain the kind of advice in the context in which they need it to properly evaluate potential opportunities for a career in professional sports. It is time to re-examine the NCAA rules that relate to agents. I don't mean for a moment to excuse conduct that's inappropriate by student-athletes."

The main reason more schools (alabama included) dont get in trouble is because the paid players come from an upbringing (usually) that says never speak with authorities!! You see your neighbor get shot, you dont say shit, you get paid by a booster you dont say shit...Saban is good at finding authority loathing individuals!! Do they take the $$?? You Bet your ass!!

If he wants to be the greatest coach or one of the greatest coaches in college football, to me, he has to go somewhere besides Alabama and win, because they've always won there at Alabama.

In other words: Spurrier is saying; go get your 3 YEAR 36 million$$$ contract in the NFL and get out of the SEC!!

Im glad your OK with the SEC buying championships, i guess since USC bought one recently, you dont begrudge them anything Train!

USC is still paying players too though; i guess to keep things fair!

The USC senior was suspended after saying into a TMZ camera: “USC … they breakin’ bread!” — or pay ballers, a taboo practice banned in college sports.

USC is on probation through June 2014.
