Grew up in Chitown and lived there most of my life. Unfortunately in Minneapolis now. No Portillos or Mr. Beef here. Giardineira is un heard of here.

just smashed two chili cheese dogs with onions and a small cheese fry from portillo's. unfrotunately went big against chicago and paid dearly. lol. i may need to go back to portillo's for a beef for some comfort food. lol

Forget the beef from portillos,you need to live a little,get a beef from Mr Beef on orleans(not any other Mr Beef just the 1 on orleans)they have the best giardiniera in the city,and this is coming from someone who was a truck driver in the city for 20 years,ive tried almost every beef stand there is in the city.Its not a hot mix,but its perfect on a beef,or if you buy a container and take it home,its excellent on a pizza.
I think a while back they used to have a Al's Beef from Taylor St.,in the Vegas airport.

not a big fan of mr. beef unless it's 3 a.m. leaving the river north area, man. not saying i would turn it down by any means. i love portillo's beef. i know, i'm crazy. love johnnie's, too

Ya, the Mr Beef on Harlem,there used to be 1 on south Harlem,and 1 on north Harlem,just south of irving pk,for some reason dont have the same giardiniera peppers as the 1 on orleans.They have the same name,but i dont think they are all owned by the same people.To me there are a couple places that are pretty comparable as far as quality and taste of their beef itself,what sets certain places above others in my book is when a place has a very distinct and homemade giardiniera,to compliment a good beef,thats why i like the Mr beef on orleans.
That makes me laugh about getting a beef extra juicy,i can still picture myself leaving downtown in the truck,picking up a Mr Beef to go,and hopping on the kennedy expressway,and trying to eat a wet beef sandwich,while driving and shifting a truck thru rush hour traffic,beef juice running down my arm,peppers dropping all over the place,but happy as could be.

Almost 42 years in Chicago, and we order thin crust almost 100% of the time. Not many order deep dish. For some reason, out of towners think we eat it all the time, but it isn't true.
