I like that Irvine selection. The Anteaters are coming off a humbling loss five days ago. They welcomed in red-hot UC-San Diego, who was 19-4, and that team was evidently determined to tie Irvine for both best conference record and best record overall, and they did that. After the 85-67 win by the Tritons, both teams were 20-4 and 10-2 atop the Big West. The Anteaters had a bad night behind the arc, going just 6-20 while the Tritons lit them up, shooting 16-31. That spelled a humiliating blowout home loss for Irvine.

The Anteaters have responded very well to losses this season, defeating Belmost 92-84 (covering by 5 points), defeating California Baptist 71-63 (covering by 5 points), and defeating Hawaii 71-55 (covering by 5 points). We're all sensing the same pattern, aren't we?

UC-San Diego has an easy game tonight in Bakersfield against the Roadrunners, who've dumped their last three home games and five straight overall. That game will almost be over by the time Irvine tips off, so I think we know the Anteaters will be motivated to win this home game vs. UC-Santa Barbara and stay atop the standings.

UC-San Diego shot 16-31 from downtown for the second game in a row. Ouch.

I'm not counting their final attempt which was a nonchalant try from the corner in the final seconds.

Untalented Bakersfield shot 2-15 on their threes. Jemel Jones tried hard for the Roadrunners, scoring 29 points on 12-23 shooting (including both of the team’s made threes). His sorry teammates shot 10-38 including 0-10 from long range.

The big dumpy German Bent Leuchten played horribly for Cal-Irvine. He came in averaging 16 points but scored just 6. 

With 8:21 to go and the lead slipping away, Irvine got fouled and Leuchten went to the line for a 1-and-1. His form was terrible and he missed badly. 

With 6:07 to go, he got fouled again and went to the line for two. He missed both.

He was shooting 85% from the line this season.

007CRUSHER, terrible luck for you. You appeared ready to possibly get a reprieve in overtime, but Miles Che inbounded the ball with six-tenths of a second left and Devin Tillis caught it and put it in off the glass for a buzzer-beater.
