The NHL's 24-team return-to-play plan is just weeks away from its anticipated start, putting NHL futures odds back into hockey betting focus. The picture for the resumption of the season also got a little more clear this week, when it was announced that the two "Hub" cities for the playoffs will be Toronto and Edmonton. Stanley Cup odds will be the first of many NHL betting options on the board as the league attempts to complete the 2019-20 season.
With the "Hub" cities revealed, as well as Edmonton being tabbed as the host for the Stanley Cup Finals, let's look at the updated odds to win the Stanley Cup.
Who is the favorite to win the Stanley Cup?
The Lightning (+500), which began the season with the best Stanley Cup odds, are slightly ahead of the Bruins (+550) despite sitting eight points behind Boston in the Eastern Conference standings. The Bruins went into the break leading the league with 100 points through 70 games.
The Vegas Golden Knights sit third on the NHL futures odds board (+625), with the Colorado Avalanche right behind at +725. Considering that the Golden Knights are just eighth in the NHL standings (tied with the Pittsburgh Penguins at 86 points, but having played two more games), sportsbooks may be bracing for liability from Las Vegas bettors.
The Edmonton Oilers, following news that they will be one of the two "Hub" cities for the remainder of the season (and the host of the Stanley Cup Finals), saw their odds improve from +1,000 to +900, moving them into fifth on the odds board, while defending the Stanley Cup champion St. Louis Blues and the Washington Capitals are at +925, rounding out all the clubs with better than 10/1 odds to win.

Past Stanley Cup Winners
The St. Louis Blues claimed Lord Stanley's grail last season despite sitting as massive long shots at +10,000 at the All-Star break and entering the postseason at +1,250.
Last year the Tampa Bay Lightning went into the playoffs as Stanley Cup favorites at a whopping +230, only to get upset in the first round.
Interestingly enough, the team that entered the playoffs with the best odds to win the Stanley Cup hasn't won the Cup in any of the last ten seasons, although three teams (Chicago in 2010 and 2013, and Pittsburgh in 2016) hoisted the Cup after coming into the postseason with the second-best odds

Understanding Stanley Cup Odds
Sportsbooks will post odds to win the Stanley Cup before the season starts. These odds are constantly adjusted throughout the offseason as players get hurt, suspended or are traded. Once the regular season begins, title odds will change daily as teams win and lose games and as more players get hurt, suspended or traded. Sportsbooks will also adjust the NHL futures odds based on handle and liability to certain teams.
Stanley Cup odds will usually look like this:
- Washington Capitals +250
This means that on a $100 bet, you'll stand to win $250 if the Caps win the Stanley Cup. If it's close to the end of the regular season or even during the playoffs and the NHL has a very dominant team, you might see that a team is has a minus sign (-) ahead of its odds.
- Tampa Bay Lightning -120
This means that you would need to bet $120 to win $100 on a Lightning Stanley Cup win.
