Thursday Night Football picks: Giants vs Eagles

Injuries have devastated the Philadelphia Eagles offense to the point that Carson Wentz might be one of just two original offensive starters to suit up against the Giants on Thursday Night Football.

The Philadelphia Eagles should change their fight song from “Fly, Eagles Fly” to Mr. Mister’s 1985 synth-pop banger “Broken Wings”. Philadelphia could be down to two healthy starters on offense when it hosts the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football.

The NFL betting odds for Week 7 have been bouncing around the key number of six, with the Eagles as high as -6.5 and as low as -5.5. The Giants are fresh off their first win over the season, edging Washington by one point on Sunday.

Here are our NFL free picks and predictions for Giants vs. Eagles on October 22.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

With TE Zach Ertz expected to miss a month due to injury, the questionable status of Eagles RB Miles Sanders for this short week means that quarterback Carson Wentz and center Jason Kelce could be the lone survivors from the original starting offensive depth chart for Philadelphia.

Wentz has been under fire from opposing pass rushes, with 11 sacks taken in the past two games and 25 already on the year. He faces an underrated stop unit in New York. The Giants defense sits in the middle of the road in DVOA at Football Outsiders – good for a 1-5 team backed by a punchless offense – and has gotten after opposing passers with 15 sacks on the season, including three in the win over Washington.

The possible loss of Sanders for this game is a big one for the Eagles. He’s been the one sure thing for this offense and was playing great football before suffering a knee injury in the third quarter versus Baltimore. Even if he suits up in the short week, it leaves Philly very fragile in the rushing department against a Giants run stop that’s been stellar in 2020, allowing only 3.7 yards per carry.

Outside of an embarrassing loss to the 49ers’ injury-riddled roster in Week 3 (which seems all too familiar in Week 7), the G-Men have hung around with their competition. And that’s all bettors really need them to do, going 3-3 against the spread heading into Thursday. They’ve either led or trailed by six or fewer points in the fourth quarter in five of their six games. There are still some New York +6.5 out there as of Monday morning, so grab the best spread you can on a road dog.

PREDICTION: New York +6 (-110)

Over/Under pick

We’ve sung the praises of New York’s underrated defense, but the Eagles’ stop unit is also playing better than its stats would indicate.

Philadelphia has given up some big scores so far this season but a lot of that has to do with the inefficiency of the offense, which has left the Eagles defense on the field for an average defensive TOP of 33:54 the past three contests – worst in the NFL during that span.

Much like the Giants, the Philly pass rush can get after the quarterback with 21 sacks on the season, including three on the elusive Lamar Jackson in Week 6. Daniel Jones doesn’t present the same fleet-footed threat and can be forced into critical errors when under pressure, with six interceptions to only three touchdowns this season.

In order to avoid those mistakes, New York will continue to run the ball. Despite losing star RB Saquon Barkley in Week 2, the Giants have gone hard on the ground with almost 45 percent of their total offense snaps being handed off the past three games. They’ve rumbled for an average of 119 yards rushing per contest in that span with Jones and RB Devonta Freeman doing the bulk of the running. That plodding pace has allowed the offense to post a positive TOP over the last three outings.

This total opened 45.5 and is down to 45 points as of Monday morning. Updated news around Sanders, as well as the Eagles’ banged-up offensive line, will likely tick this total up or down a point before kickoff on Thursday.

PREDICTION: Under 45 (-110)

Player Prop Pick

data-renderer-start-pos="74">With the Eagles’ top running option a question mark, the offensive line in shambles, and an opposing defense bringing the heat, Wentz could find himself shouldering the rushing load for Philly on Thursday night.

That’s been the case in the red zone already this season, with Wentz rushing for four touchdowns through six games, including a late QB keeper (followed by a failed 2-point convert) at the end of Sunday’s game with the Ravens.

Wentz is ninth in the NFL in rushing scores with 171 total yards – 28 of those gains when inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. New York is actually best in the NFL in terms of rushing yards allowed to QBs so far this year (just 37 total yards) but hasn’t faced the most mobile quarterbacks in the land. We like a desperate Wentz to sneak another into the end zone Thursday night.

PREDICTION: Carson Wentz touchdown score (+241)
