The NHL odds for the New York Islanders to win the Stanley Cup have shortened to +600, and in Game 3 of their Eastern Conference playoff series against the Philadelphia Flyers, the Isles showed NHL bettors why. New York shook off an early Philly goal before dominating the rest of the way and taking a 2-1 series lead with a 3-1 win yesterday.
There’s still a lot of hockey left, and both teams are back at it again tonight at the bubble in Toronto. Here are our best NHL picks and predictions for Game 4, scheduled for 8:00 ET at Scotiabank Arena.
Philadelphia Flyers vs New York Islanders betting preview
Starting Goalies
Flyers: Carter Hart- playoffs - 7-4, 2.08 GAA, .931 SV%
Islanders: Semyon Varlamov - playoffs - 9-2, 1.69 GAA, .935 SV%
It’s hard to pin Saturday’s loss on Hart, who certainly wasn’t at his best but also isn’t getting much help in front of him. His .931 save percentage is second among all goalies remaining in the postseason, trailing only the man across from him in net — Semyon Varlamov.
Islanders Head Coach Barry Trotz has a way of pushing just the right buttons with his players in order to get them to respond, and Varlamov is a perfect example. The 32-year-old was sent to the pine early in Game 2 but responded on Saturday to stop 26 shots and shut down the Flyers after an early first-period goal.
Injuries
Flyers: Oskar Lindblom LW (out), Samuel Morin D (out)

Betting Trend to Know

Moneyline pick
The price to bet on the Isles has slowly gone up with each game in his series, and now we find them at a -120 on the moneyline. That’s still good value for a team that is simply playing better hockey right now.
The Flyers have had issues putting together 60 full minutes, and that can be costly against a disciplined New York squad that patiently waits for you to make mistakes before pouncing. Just look at Game 3: Philly took the early 1-0 lead before being outshot 25-15 in the first two periods.
The Flyers might make this a series, but I need to see them fully engaged before I trust them again.
PREDICTION: Islanders ML (-120)
Over/Under pick
The total for Game 4 is set at five at most books — 5.5 if you want to lay more juice on the Under.
It’s a low number, but as is usually the case in Vegas, it’s the right one. With this series featuring two of the best performing netminders in the playoffs, and an Islanders team that can play lockdown defense, I’ll look for a low-scoring affair.
PREDICTION: Under 5 (-105)
Prop pick
Goals should be at a premium in this game, with both teams a little more sluggish than usual since they are playing on back-to-back evenings.
If that happens, we may end up with overtime. Since that has already happened once in this series, I’ll take my chances with another and see if I can cash in.
PREDICTION: Overtime (+275)
Flyers vs Islanders Betting Card
- Islanders ML (-120)
- Under 5 (-105)
- Overtime (+275)
