The oil companies would like you to think there is a supply problem. In reality, the problem is not the supply, it's the lack of oil refineries.
Look at it this way: You give the oil companies two choices. #1) The rights to go drill as much oil as they want to sell on todays inflated market for as much profit as they can grab. #2) The direction to spend their capital on new refineries that can increase supply at the consumer level and reduces consumer costs.

You hear all the right-wingers regurgitating the conservative talking points, "we have to open up the drilling, blah, blah, blah" The reality is that if you don't force big oil to spend some investment capital on refineries, you don't achieve anything but make the oil companies more profitable.
Very simple - You guys want to drill? Then build some refineries also.
No gorging yourself on the frosting unless you're going to help everybody eat some of that dry cake too.
