I think the decline in a belief in a higher power is the heart of the problem. In the 1940s I was taught the Ten Commandments in school, along with the pledge of allegiance. And, we had better not miss church on Sunday..
I had a couple of friends who skipped church often, ( you couldn't skip school or the truant officer would be at your doorstep.) I realize today that their parents were never around. Later, I went into the military, both of them became hippie's. They died about 20 years ago, one from an overdose.
Some people believe it's up to the government to teach and enforce parenting. Others believe it's up to the parents to teach their own children.
Personally, I think without God, there is no hope, without hope there's no future, without a future we just live for today. That just doesn't seem logical to me.

Not much of a religious person, but would definitely like to give 2
for those remarks.

I just did a double take while reading this. Are you sure you're a liberal?

Slit, I have been tagged a libreal around here but I am a moderate. I believe the government should help people help themselves.. When I see the greed on the right, I can't help but feel for the less fortunate. So vote democrat.

I agree with this but I'm kind of torn because I am more or less an aethiest. I say more or less because until science can explain everything I will believe in the possibility of a higher power, but I'm not quite sold on it. I just haven't seen or experienced anything that would make me a believer.
I do think that society's moral decay is a result of it moving away from the fundamental beliefs that are found in the good book or preached by the church. I don't necessarily think you have to believe in a God, any God for that matter, to be a good person. However, as a person who does gamble, I do believe in playing percentages and I think you would find more upstanding, quality people that are church going as oppose to those that don't.
Not saying the non-church goers are all bad, but I think you would find a better group of people that are involved in something of that nature.
It is also an institution that brings people together. I find that with the advances in technology that family's, friends, communities, etc become more distant, even though a lot of this technology is supposed to bring us closer. I no longer have to go and visit, or even call family to find out how they are doing. I can just look it up on facebook, email, or text.

Ktrain,
Im' not here to preach to anyone, I'm just stating my beliefs and my philosophy.
When I look at the beauty of the universe, the stars, the sun, the earth, the ocean, trees, mountains, the birds, the flowers. I see a creator, I then believe what scripture says. We are without excuse when we see all these things and still do evil, and not believe in a heavenly Creator.
When I look at my calender and it's says 2012 years A.D.. after what, I ask ? Why isn't the date 12,000,00012 ? And then there is B.C. , how long is B.C ? Well, they say about 6 to 10 thousand years, counting backwards, the years 6,000, B.C, then 5,000 B.C. and so on down to zero. Makes sense to me.
I've been blessed to live a long life on this earth . I have seen the good in many people and the evil in other people. That makes me wonder, why do the evil ones do harm to other human beings, and creatures ? Why are they full of hatred, envy, greed. etc. ?
Then I realize that God is love, because scripture says, God so loved the world, that he sent his Son. So I am a Believer. and I don't care what anyone here says to me about that, they can ridicule me all they want.

I know you're not preaching to anyone. I also encourage you to believe in whatever you want. We have different views on something, no biggie.
I do agree with somewhat with your first post. I thought it was a good one. I believe in a lot of what the church preaches as far as treating other people goes. I just don't believe in some of the other stuff.
I'm not anti-church or religion though. And I always encourage everyone to believe what they want so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.
Go with God.

DL36. Folks have their own decision to make about. They see the same beauty that I see, they have heard the same words.
I believe in a life after death, and that someday I will met my passed loved ones. I have seen a catapiller's life transformed after death, a dead seed in the ground come back to life. And that my friend, gives me hope.

IMO, and this admittedly sounds counter intuitive, greed is good. (apologies to G. Gekko).
It forces innovation and competition.
Ironically, some of the most “greedy” have figured out ways to give people what they want more cheaply than their competitors.
Calling an entrepreneur greedy can be morally satisfying, and, I would say, in a lot of cases, probably true.
But the effects of his or her “greed”, on society as a whole, are advantageous.
