Here is the the story in a nutshell: a u.s. fighter jet crashes into a California home and kills several members of a family in 2008. read the whole story here:
-I don't know why people tolerate these types of trials taking 3 1/2 years to complete. I'm sure it will probably be longer before they actually get the money too. People always talk about how trials need to take this long to make sure decision are not made based on knee jerk emotions and all the facts are gathered, etc but how about the fact that we have a government and court system entrenched in bureaucracy whose government workers profit off these long delays and let alone the pain it causes the victims who must wait years to see "justice" carried out. And then they wonder why people retaliate with violence immediately. It might have something to do with the governments version of justice (if that is what actually occurs in the end) takes years and years to happen.
-Why does the government think it can make up for the pain with money? And I know there are those who say it can never make up for it. Obviously they are trying to accomplish something by giving the victim's family that much money. Secondly, let us keep in mind that this is the taxpayer's money they are giving away, not the offender's money. Let alone the amount of taxpayer's money that was lost when the fighter jet was destroyed.
-What should the government do then to compensate the family? How about punish the pilot and people actually responsible by doing something other than taking their money. How about they go to prison or get executed. I know the article said there were 13 members of the military who were disciplined. First off, I am sure their idea of discipline is "getting re-assigned" or placed on "administrative leave" Or whatever it is I am sure it doesn't match the loss of 4 innocent lives. I am sure they are still not in prison today. Second, they are probably just scapegoats who had nothing to do with the accident and were merely punished in a PR move and the military elite who are really responsible keep their jobs with no punishment.
-I am sure the problems that contributed to the crash are not permanently fixed. They probably had some over educated government bureaucrat get up in court and talk about how they have all these new procedures in place to prevent something like this from happening in the future. You can be sure when something does happen like this again nobody will remember to punish that over educated government bureaucrat or the people who were responsible for putting in those new procedures in place if they remember this case at all. The victim's husband said himself it was cost cutting moves and mechanical problems that contributed to the crash. I am sure they were done so some military or political elite could have a higher salary.
-Lastly I find it amusing how the law apparently doesn't allow for financial compensation for " for grief, suffering or punitive damages" but it does allow for the loss of love and companionship because the government attorney left it up to the judge to decide. First off, you can be sure the judge is military and government friendly who probably personally knows the military leaders and government attorneys who are representing the defendants. Second I would be curious to know what criteria was used to determine companionship can be compensated but not suffering. Who does the government think it is to determine that??? Furthermore, who are they decide which family member gets what of that 17 million based on their relationship with the victims (for example, the father in law got 3.7m and the adult children got 1.5m)? How does the government know what person's relationship was like and try to quantify it?
