Obama Meets Duke Champs: Admits to Illegal Gambling

Well a day after Obama took the time to do a 15 minute long interview for the NBA on TNT and discuss the playoffs and Lebron, sure enough he penciled in some time to meet with the Duke National Championship team.  Normally I would be thrilled as a Duke fan for them to have an opportunity to meet with the president, however with the oil spill, and the state of the economy I think he has more important things to be doing.

One interesting note was when Coach K confronted Obama about having Duke out in the Sweet 16 to Villanova... Obama replied, "It was nothing personal, just trying to win some money."

Now after Obama scorned the city of Las Vegas, and has upheld the online gambling ban... I am wondering how he managed to have some money riding on the NCAA tournament.  HMMMMMMMM

I would imagine he is just talking about amongst his friends.

I agree he could have waited a bit until a few of these serious issues are closer or have been resolved.

I don't care any gambling outside of Las Vegas on sports in the United States is technically illegal.  Office pools, one on one bets, bookies, etc... I would think our President and leader could abide by his own rules   If he can do it... we should be able to do it as well without any consequences

I was under the impression that gambling is legal, as long as nobody is taking a rake or percentage. So I could hold a personal poker tourney for cash, as long as I wasn't profiting off it because I was holding it?

I actually know a girl whose uncle owns a bar here in Connecticut and once a week they would have poker tournaments with like a $50 buy in and would get 12-24 guys coming in.  The cops raided the place and arrested everyone there and they all ended up with fines and the bar got a large fine.  Not sure about elsewhere... I am pretty sure sports is a no no... no matter what

Hmmm, I could be wrong I can't say for certain.

Maybe because the bar owners are profitting in a sense (alcohol sales).

What a waste of resources haha. 

It's silly people can't use their own earned money to invest  in sports

Yea, I agree....and if he does he definitely shouldn't come out and tell people.

would think it depends on the State, but that is the case in Alabama.

Incorrect again. A private poker game for cash (gambling) is illegal in California and I assume most other states.

Like I said, it is surely ILLEGAL here in CT... unless you head to Foxwoods or Mohegan Sun of course

By cash what do you mean?  Rake?  If not that, as long as its a donation to the house, I believe it is ok.  We play a lot and its always a house donation and even had the mayor of a city play once, there seemed to be no problems.  Again it depends a lot on what you mean by cash.

The reason its illegal is because the State isn't getting their rake!

That doesn't explain why Obama has publicly talked about hoping Lebron would go to Chicago Bulls and leave Cleveland Cavs.  Politically speaking shouldn't he want to make nice with Ohio?

Plus, Duke is in NC, which is just as much a swing state as PA.
