For 12 years after an independent medical examiner ruled he could stop playing hurt and return to work, Hurley received a monthly disability check at the taxpayers' expense.
But even Hurley -- the latest, and laziest, in a long line of firefighters -- eventually decided the jig was up. He ignored the funds' orders to return to work, attend mandatory training or explain his absences.
He'd moved on. He was a chef, re-trained at the city's expense. When the fund finally terminated his $3,200 monthly benefit in 2007, Hurley didn't bother to appeal.
His union, however, did.
City Commissioner Randy Leonard sees considerable irony in that. While Hurley is "reviled" among Portland firefighters, Leonard says, their union is concerned that ethical members of the frat might be fired without just cause.
The city failed to define the wages, hours and working conditions of Hurley's new low-hazard job, Leonard said, and an arbitrator ruled these are basic requirements of a city contract, subject to bargaining.
Leonard and Commissioner Dan Saltzman are going to war over this.
Leonard believes the arbitrator's ruling -- which would hand Chef Hurley $103,000 in lost disability payments and restore that $3,200 monthly boondoggle -- is "final and binding. There is no appeal."
To challenge the Portland Fire Fighters Association at this point is obnoxious and short-sighted, Leonard adds, when the city is "asking them to take a pay freeze and consider a furlough. They're going to tell us to put our proposal where the sun don't shine." by Steve Duin The Oregonian

First off Slim, i know your trying to throw a suttle dig at me and if you want to dance again we can dance, no sweat off my ass.
Now lets get a a couple of things perfectly clear. There is always going to be guys like this firefighter in every occupation who are complete stiffs and spend more time trying to get out of doing their job, then they would actually spend performing the job. This is everywhere in society.
Secondly its not the unions fault that the city failed to do their job and make sure something like this wouldnt have happened. The union just has to protect the contract for the good members and if they let the city just have the win, then there would be precedent set for any future cases which could cost the job of a firefighter who could be in the right. Unions arent in the business of wanting to protect lousy workers, they just have to do it in order to protect all the good workers who perform their jobs. So yes some of these slugs do slip thru the system.
Lastly for all you union bashers, maybe you should take a job some place that has a union and you will see first hand its differnt then what you have been told to believe. The remaining unions in our country are the last defense we have with our employers being able to just shit on workers rights, but alot of you just cant seem to see that. I feel real sorry for our countries workers, when the unions all vanish. God help these people because emplyers will walk all over them.

I have worked for unions both in Canada and now that I am back in the states. You point out There is always going to be guys like this firefighter in every occupation who are complete stiffs and spend more time trying to get out of doing their job, then they would actually spend performing the job. This is everywhere in society.
If you are the company how do you fire that person that is slacking?
A Good business is willing to pay the good employees more than union workers because they bring so much value to the business.
With the workers unionized though you cant pay one who brings less value to your business an appropriate reduced salary.

Somebody else started this thread. I was simply pointing out the obvious facts. As far as the help thread I thought I would tell you how I make plays like that. Covers Help later confirmed EXACTLY what I said. At the time the man made he picks all the games may not have been offered. The early bird gets the worm

well they have a little glitch in their contest, because there were 2 hockey games on the board, with one for sure never going over minus 150. To make the contest fair and not the early bird gets the worm, they need to make sure all games in all sports are up. But thats just my opinion.

CDnumbers, you are mistaken we have never danced....So please, leave me out of your sexual fantasies....if you find yourself in the wrong body..that's your problem ...
..look if you want dance or buy someone a drink and "bust their balls''..why don't you try KOAJ again .. ?
Just leave me out of it ...
Why do you feel a topic about greedy union leaders sticking it to the community is directed towards you ?
Hurley (the firefighter) is "reviled" among Portland firefighters...reviled ,humiliated ..CD numbers ..the dues paying members were humiliated by his actions ...The union leaders did it for their greedy self interest ...
To the detriment of taxpayers, the greedy union leaders were clever in finding a way to get around disability reforms....and drain the disability fund of over $100,000 that could be used for legitimate disability claims in the future ....I'll give you that..

No fan of Today's unions and I've said it before. To go after them , one must look at the connection with GOVERNMENT. Same to be said of Corporations and the Central Banking system.etc. That's just my opinion. I'll keep my asshole thanks.

Nice try slim with the sex thing. Lets make it words you can understand, would you like to go to battle again, like the old days, because i dont have a problem with that at all.
Like i explianed up above the union had to defend the contract, if they didnt when the next guy came along who needed to be defended, precedent would have been set and that guy who wasnt in the wrong loses his job. Really why dont you blame this cities lawyers for not doing their jobs and preventing this from happening. Clearly they dropped the ball and the guy would have been gone, but of course you overlook that part of the article and instead go attack the unions. Your the typical guy who made his money working in the unions, but then when got offered a job in management you turned on the unions. True scum, guys like you disgust me. I would bet any amount that the guys you used to call your friends, hate your guts today.
