BYU is 10-2, both their losses have come to teams who are going to bowl games (FSU and TCU). They have 4 victories over teams who are going to bowl games.
Oregon state is 8-4, all 4 losses coming to teams who are going bowling (USC, Oregon, Arizona, and Cincinatti). They have 2/3 wins on teams that are going bowling (3 if UCLA goes, 2 if army)
BYU will be going to the Las Vegas bowl again. BYU is coming in hot, winning their last 4 games by an avg of 17 points. Oregon State comes here after a heart crushing defeat to Oregon with the Rose bowl on the line. Will they be motivated? They went from playing in the Rose bowl to the Las Vegas bowl with one loss.
Analysis: Both teams are strong on these sides of the ball.Oregon State's offensive is balanced. They have a great back in Rodgers and a really good passing attack. BYU also has a solid defense, but is much more tough on the run then pass. So its their weakness vs. Oregon State strength. Advantage Oregon State, but nothing drastic.
Analysis: BYU has a very good offense. They are definently more pass heavy with Hall, which is good when facing Oregon State. Oregon State is much better against the run then the pass. Advantage is with BYU here.
Other:
Net Punt Avg: OSU: 37.0 BYU:37.0
Penalties / Peanlty yards per game OSU: 7.5 / 56.4 yards BYU: 7 / 66.1 yards
3rd Down conversion (offensive) OSU: 47% BYU: 55%
3rd Down Conversion (defensive) OSU: 36% BYU: 39%
Field Goals: OSU: 22 for 27 BYU: 9 for 13
Red Zone Scores: OSU: 96% BYU: 88%
Red Zone Scores (defensive) OSU: 87% BYU: 79%
Red Zone Touchdowns: OSU: 72% BYU: 77%
Red Zone Touchdowns (defensive): OSU: 76% BYU: 56%
Turnover Margin: OSU: +6 BYU: -1
**Scoring By Half** 1st Half: BYU Outscores Opponents by 101, OSU by 113 2nd Half: BYU outscores Opponents by 53, OSU OUTSCORED by 5
Analysis: Not a lot to take out of this section. One thing is when OSU gets in the red zones, they get points on the board. BYU defense is also pretty good at keeping opponents out of the end zone. OSU also dominates the Turnover Margin compared to BYU. I found it interesting how both teams are very strong first half teams. If BYU can survive thru the first half, I think they will be able to win this game.
For the overall game, I lean BYU. No play yet, will have to do more research. My prediction for the game right now is...
BYU: 30 OSU: 27

The problem with all of these useless stats that you posted is that those numbers are against totally different levels of opponents. Just keep that in mind when you are looking at stats like that. These numbers would be accurate within the same conference, or if they played the same level of opponents. In other words, those stats mean crap!

Yes I know they're in different conferences. The MWC is no slouch. The Mountain West has 3 defenses ranked in the top 20 (more stats). BYU has a winning record against the Pac 10 over the last couple years. If you don't like the stats, don't read them. I know I use some of this info to cap the games and have had a great season.

Good luck with that philosophy. I can go to the Division II and find a team that has better stats than Florida, Alabama and Texas...should I pay attention to those stats too?
MWC is no slouch when you are talking about 2 teams (TCU and BYU) remember the BYU vs. FSU game. Otherwise you have:
Colorado State, San Diego State, New Mexico, UNLV, Utah, Wyoming and Air Force.
Good luck with your stats!

Do you honestly think that I only use stats to analyze the games? Notice how I only have posted leans and not official plays. I run through these stats for all the games usually to get a basis and a feel for the game. I then go further in the game using other factors. I just feel that using stats helps me focus better and get an official lean then take other factors into account to determine the official play. I normally don't post these numbers when I post plays because this is just the beginning of my analysis of the games, but I figured since I had extra time between each game I would post the info for others.
Whatever, use if you want. Btw, when i was at the Outback bowl last year and faced your South Carolina team, I was very impressed with your fans. They were all very kind and were actually apologizing for not giving us a better game. One of the best fan bases I have run across from all my years of following my Hawkeye's around across the country.

Hawk my friend......your a class act.....lot's of newbies on this sight would have got their feathers ruffled by those posts. I appreciate the gathering of the stats my friend. I have to say that right now, I am really liking the Pac 10 in most of their matchups. And I liked OSU here for the last week, but the more I think about it and listen to my gut.......There is something about this matchup that makes me think BYU can win this game. I just don't know yet. Keep up the good work my friend!!

I couldn't agree more with Irisheyez. I usually stay from the threads because I don't have the time and in the past I've laid off of sides because of opinions posted and lost out on some winners. However if you simply read and do your homework and evaluate these pages I believe you'll have a better season for it.
That being said I would like to congratulate you on your post which I find very well written as well as highly informative. Its up to the reader to do as he pleases with the information.
Good Luck with your picks,i don't know where you find the time to do all of this work but keep it up. I'm hope you have a successful Bowl Season.
Almost forgot I'll make a small play on OSU. I just can't get past that BYU loss to Florida St.

This Bowl Could Be Great Because ... BYU loves to make a statement in games like this against Pac 10 teams. Oregon State was within an eyelash of playing in Pasadena and have been terrific under Mike Riley in bowl games winning three straight. This Bowl Could Suck Because ... when BYU has been bad this year, it has been baaaaad. This was the only team in America that couldn't seem to figure out the Florida State defense. At home, the Cougars Jerk Reaction ... Oregon State needs to show up and win this or it'll only further the argument that the top-shelf of the Mountain West is every bit as good as the anyone in the Pac weren't even close against TCU. If QB Max Hall has a bad game, this could get ugly in a hurry.

I am rolling with the Mormon's here - OSU is likely not real excited to play, and the MWC has a good track record against the Pac 10 - Las Vegas is home to BYU (they have played there so many times), and I can see OSU peeps out and about having a good time...not to mention BYU will be ready to play...taking the Cougs and a FG

both teams have been solid for me in the 1st half of games all season so I'm still stuck on this one....Tues under don't work during Bowl games so I might take the over in this one as well.

I'll use your stats. Thanks for posting them. Sometimes you find info in the stats that is too important to overlook. All info much appreciated.

Not a great game here to bet here. Since I'm in a contest to bet all bowl games this year, I laid a 1 unit bet on OSU -2.5.
The motivation factor worries me a bit with OSU because of the fact that they lost a heartbreaking game to their rival Oregon for a bid to the Rose Bowl. But Mike Riley is a good coach with a good bowl record and I think he'll get the most out of his players. Plus, the QB for OSU Sean Canfield can play. If anyone watched the OSU-Oregon game, you came out impressed by this kid's play.
Small play but OSU -2.5

Greatly appreciate the work. Please keep posting the stats. They can be a great tool if you know how to use them and are also usually the first thing I look at when capping a game.

BCS rankings are BYU #14, OR St. #18. Game is a "home game" for BYU in terms of fan base and knowledge of Sin City. Motivation for graduates and adrenaline from the crowd will carry this so called smaller, slower team from a so called nothing division to a victory. Remember people, if Oregon St is such a better team, why did the line open at -1? It moved to -2' because the public thinks the same way as some of these posts. Think logically and don't over analyze the stats and the shoulda beens.
I do well at these Bowl games for the following reasons: logic, opening line, location, fan travel, desire, injuries/suspensions.
BYU +2'
