Usually it is 3 days before the race.

give me some input
Bill,
I am far from being an expert on handicapping, in fact I am admittedly still in my infancy.
Be that as it may, Steven Davidowitz writes on page 211 in his book Betting Thoroughbreds (second revised edition): "A workout of any distance at any reasonable speed one or two days before a race is a useful "blowout" and can be interpreted as a positive sign of trainer intention."
Again, my novice stature may not provide me with the ability to see the forest from the trees in regard to Davidowitz statement, but it is in there nonetheless.
Thanks,
AC
