for Marshall: - trying to avenge the most embarassing loss in a while - Senior Night
for Southern Miss: - ? - ? (is it even remotely possible they will 'rest starters' like some NBA coaches do on the final 1-2 days of regular season play when playoff seeding had already been determined)?

Southern Miss resting players is the only shot Marshall has to cover.
Not enough there for me to take Marshall, I'm still on Southern Miss. How do you bet against a team at -6.5 that won by 50+ last time they played? No matter where they're playing, or what night it is, none of that is enough for me to give a team 44+ points of an edge the second time around.

I really hope this is not how you cap games. There's examples of drastic results between rematch games every where. Quick example, Northwestern beat Purdue @ home by 15 then 3 weeks later lose to them by 31 on the road. That's a 46 point difference.

One can find examples to prove snow is black, if one is so inclined....but
So far this season teams that covered convincingly the first time around, usually cover the second game as well.
The thing keeping me from taking a plunge on SM is... this game was played a year ago, on a senior night at Marshall, and home team won by three. Unfortunately, I can't find any info on that game, or Marshall's senior night record over the past number of years. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Southern Miss didn't beat marshall by 50 at home that year either. Little relevance.
No this is not the only angle I use when capping games, but how can you pick against a team that won by 50... in college basketball.. and now is -6.5. If you're not going to take Southern Miss, why take anything related to either team ATS?

Jan 21: SM bt Marshall 67-63 (line fluctuated from SM-4 to -5) Mar 3: Marshall bt SM 79-75 (line around Marshall -3)
In this final game, Marshall started three seniors (Pitts, Johnson, Pena) who combined for 93 minutes and 36 points on 13/28 FG shooting. Generally, seniors tend to get more burn in their final home game. I think it's worth looking into what Marshall's current seniors are capable of:
Dennis Tinnon (31 minutes, 10 pts average in 2012/13) - had good four career games vs SM and a terrible last game - like everybody else.
Robert Goff (17 minutes, 4 pts average in 2012/13) - has been average throughout his 2 year career with The Herd and terrible against SM
Nigel Spikes (25 minutes, 6 pts 7 rebs in 2012/13) - decent center, hadn't played many minutes against SM but his minutes were solid
That's a combined 73 minutes, 20 points per game this season for the three seniors who are - I think - likely to get more minutes tonight.
By comparison, last year's game featured three Marshall seniors who averaged 83 minutes, 30 points per game in 11/12 season. As mentioned above, they combined for 93 minutes and 36 points in their Senior game night (which is no surprise since the game went over by 20 points... any chance these coaches like to put on a show on Senior nights on a regular basis?)

I'm with you - I'm not going to take Marshall for sure; it is the size (and type) of the SM wager that is currently being determined.
The more I'm digging, the more I see that the line has been adjusted properly and it may not be such a one-sided game after all.

-- Home side won last seven Southern Miss-Marshall games; Eagles lost last three visits here, by 13-30-4 points- they crushed Marshall 102-46 (-9) in first meeting Jan 23, making 11-20 from arc in game that USM led 53-17 at half. C-USA home underdogs of more than 5 points are 2-7 vs spread. Marshall lost five of last seven games, but is 4-3 at home, with losses by 11-4-12. Eagles are 1-7-1 vs spread in last nine games.

I went against a team last with CSN. CSN lost to Cal Poly by 46 on the road, in the rematch at CSN's court I think Cal Poly was favored by like -6.5 or 7, I bet on CSN. I knew the first game was an anomaly and wasnt gonna happen the 2nd time, CSN won the rematch by 13. I knew the two teams were closer in competition than the first result. Home and away scores are vastly different the majority of the time, venue, travel, and revenge does matter.

Oh and by the way. It's no wonder SM kept pounding on the hapless Marshall team in the first meeting - their previous game was in the conference tournament and a 3 point underdog won by 11. Revenge is a b-tch. The question is - have the Golden Eagles had their fill?

It is also noteworthy that Marshall is coached by a third year coach Tom Herrion, while this season is the first with SM for Donnie Tyndall. He is the guy who coached Morehead state to the third round of NCAA tournament in 2010/11.

Sharps like home team. Do they realize Dwayne Davis is going to average 30 points in his final two games before getting the, quote, 2013 C Spire Howell Trophy, awarded annually to the best college basketball player in Mississippi.
Also, an interesting bit apparently from a disgruntled Marshall fan on twitter: Mike Ferguson?@workinferg
@CoachTomHerrion 6th tallest team in the country and you play no defense and shoot 30 threes a game. Just how dumb are you?

Never mind. The game is irrelevant: https://www.conferenceusa.com/sports/m-baskbl/spec-rel/030312aac.html
Never mind the never mind. I forgot about the 'invitation' part of NCAA tournament:
ESPN's Joe Lunardi put out another NCAA bracket projection today and USM
remains in the "Last Four Out" along with three other SEC teams - Ole
Miss, Kentucky and Alabama.
If USM wins tonight, its postseason picture won't change. It it loses,
chances at an NCAA Tournament at-large bid will disappear

S.Miss definitely needs the game to keep at large hopes alive, but they're not a dominant team & Marshall isn't as bad as that 50 point blowout loss. I'm not touching this, but something to keep in mind is that the next game after Marshall was so badly embarrassed they played Memphis down to the buzzer on the road losing by 1. In the S. Miss game they had 31 turnovers, twice their average, shot 13 for 39 at the line & let S. Miss shoot 63% & 11-20 from 3pt range. I think they remember the performance & will give closer to the effort they gave against Memphis after their worst game of the season.

rshall is obviously looking for some home revenge tonight after Southern Mississippi blasted the Herd 102-46 earlier this season, but the dislike for their opponent runs even deeper.
It's because Tyndall and Herrion don't like each other. That stems from an incident when Tyndall was coaching Morehead State and Herrion contacted him in hopes of scheduling a game.
After Tyndall declined, I wrote about Marshall's non-conference scheduling problems and chided Morehead State for not playing an annual series with the nearby Herd. That prompted Tyndall to contact Herrion and accuse him of putting me up to writing the column. That, of course, is preposterous.
Yet, that's what led to Tyndall running up the score.
