Since it’s a little later in the day than when I typically post, I’ll keep this short.
The angle is pretty straight forward in this game as it matches up the two fastest teams in Conference USA. Houston comes in averaging 68.7 possessions per game (#71) and Rice is averaging 69.6 possessions per game (#49).
What’s even more impressive is the correlation the two teams have when playing other fast paced teams. Excluding opponents from non-D1 and HBC conferences, these teams have played a combined 18 games vs teams ranked in the top 175 in terms of pace. All but 4 of those games went over tonight’s total—and 3 of those landed on 144. I find this correlation to be very statistically significant.
Recent results also set up nicely for tonight’s over. Rice has averaged 70.4 possessions in its last 5 games against much slower paced teams than Houston is. And Houston is coming off its second lowest point total of the season, a 54 point effort vs Tulane. Tonight’s game vs Rice should be the perfect bounce back opponent to face in a game that KenPom predicts will see over 70 possessions.
Good luck if you decide to make a play

Not a bad spot to be considering it took Rice ~8 minutes to score their first points in the game
Adjusted game total is 146
Was just going to post the same thing....feel a little better going into the 2nd half....Lets get this Riccio....good to see the adjusted total right at the same number before the game ....
