4 games on the slate tonight, and two of them have very difficult to measure variables. first, oregon opens a new building tonight in eugene, secondly, washington (who jusy lost gaddy for the season to an acl injury), now has a player (most likely a guard from seattle) under criminal investigation for a sexual assualt. The local media is refusing to name the player. regardless of the guilt factor, anyone facing such a serious accusation is bound to be impacted.
two ways to look at the uw situation . . . .they might be very focused tonight and then take a step backwards on saturday vs call, or perhaps they lose some focus tonight. we all saw how wsu crashed and burned at the end of their 14 day road trip, college kids just aren't used to dealing with factors that are above and beyond the normal.
uw has already lost one back court player and now a second is likely playing with his thoughts elsewhere. I'm not suggesting that he will be thinking about this during the game, but it seems logical to project that a criminal investigation of this nature has impacted his preparation this week.
uw brings a very efficient offense into palo alto tonight, where they'll find a middling pac-10 team getting 7 points. uw hasn't been tested since Gaddy's injury, i'm not so sure giving 7 points on the road vs an okay pac-10 team is a good idea, especially with the criminal investigation happening at the same time.
usc has quietly positioned themselves at or near the top of the teams chasing UW for a regular season title, and tonight they get the pleasure of opening Matt Court, which features the strangest court colors in college hoops. oregon is in the process of rebuilding under altman and has yet to record a pac-10 win after hosting the az schools and then travelling to the wa schools. this new arena has incorporated many of the same ideals that made Mac court such a tough place to play. i'd be cautious in laying the 5 pts to back the trojans. the ducks figure to win a few games this season in pac-10 play, would anyone be shocked if they won the first game at Matt Court ?
open the paper tomorrow morning, and if you read that a "distracted uw team" struggled in palo alto and oregon opened their new building with a win, would you be surprised ?

Yea Louisvile opened a new stadium earlier this year and played KY and I thought they'd play well since it was a new place and all and they got wood shed

I live WSU in their pick'em matchup with Cal, i do rate the LA schools higher than the bay area schools, and WSU didn't embarrass themselves in the southland at their tail end of their monster road trip. they had ucla on the ropes before the roof caved in, and they fought well with usc and had a chance to tie the game late before a silly turnover doomed them. wsu isn't playing the dick bennett level of defense, but they do have improved defense this season, allowing a pac-10 best 37.5% overall shooting and only 28.6% from 3pt land. cal might be a touch overmatched at this end of the court.
