The wild and crazy coach of the Tennessee Volunteers has done it again, leading his team to its third Sweet Sixteen appearance in the past four seasons. Ho-hum. Just another year in Knoxville for one of the most underrated coaches in the nation.
Pearl has four Sweet Sixteen trips on his career resume and since coming to Tennessee in 2005, there aren’t many coaches who can match his resume: three Sweet Sixteens, a 7-4 NCAA Tournament record, a 30+ win season, a No. 1 ranking, a pair of wins over two different top ranked teams, and a pair of wins over two different No. 2 ranked teams.
This season, with wins over then-No.1 Kansas and then-No.2 Kentucky, the Volunteers became the first team since 2001 to accomplish the feat.
Sure, the Volunteers have had their share of head cases and some off the court trouble this year. They were even run off the court in the SEC Semifinals against Kentucky.
But when the Volunteers tip it up against Ohio State on Friday night, history says they have more than a puncher’s chance. Will you bet against them? I know I won't.
