with no more Russian Premier League until March, I thought I would share my thoughts on other leagues/ sports. Expect some Bundesliga, EPL, but mostly NBA and NFL.

Other than the RPL, what other leagues take a break right now?

Europe

When not specified, winter breaks are around the Christmas and New Year weeks.

  • English and Scottish Premier Leagues: mid-August - early May (no winter break)
  • Ligue 1 (France): early August - late May (previously, mid-July to early June with a month-long winter break)
  • Bundesliga (Germany): mid-August - early May (winter break of one to two months)
  • Serie A (Italy): late August - late May
  • Superleague Greece: August - April, with playoffs in May
  • League of Ireland: March - October
  • Eredivisie (Netherlands): early August - late April or early May, before six playoff days
  • Norwegian Premier League: March - November
  • Primeira Liga (Portugal): late August - early May
  • Russian Premier League: Transition to an August–May season completed in 2012. Previously March–December.
  • La Liga (Spain): late August - late May or early June (break for Christmas and New Year)
  • Allsvenskan (Sweden): March-Early April - late October-early November. Summer breaks until the mid 1990s. Play-offs in late October-early November between 1982-1992.
