I went in 2010 stayed at a camp site for 3 nights in a tent with electric hook ups paid 15 a night and it included hot showers which werent that bad!!! They were about 10min. From the track only complaint was a raccoon tried getting in my tent on the fri. Night scared the fuckinggggg shittttttt out of me and I was wasted!!!! Fri. Which is oaks day is way more fun then the actual derby u can watch the races, get cold beer very quick and get your bets in with no problems... Bol buddy 
it is tough to find a room this late in the game. most hotels will make you stay 3 day min and are at max rates. you might want to look 30-40 minutes out of the metro for a room, such as southern indiana, shelbyville, ky etc
oaks is considered the "locals" day but is almost as crowded as the derby. oaks had 112K in attendance last year.
louisville has plenty to do and is easy to get around with exception of the traffic nightmare around Churchill Downs.

the Sheraton is a good place, atleast from the stand point of being able to walk to the track and in being in a safe area. you are also a short cab ride down to 4th street where all the downtown bars and restaurants are.
you may also want to try going to the bars on bardstown road and baxter avenue in "the highlands" more of a local flavor there, 4th street is mostly tourist. this is also a short cab ride from the sheraton.
can only get 1 day off work fri so we'll be driving down from ny thurs night...very clutch you had a friend down there to stay with at the moment rooming is the only question mark at this point
