Where can a fellerz go to play low stake and learn? I know the raw basics of the cards in simple form is all..
The games I've actually played in with friends have gone pretty well. Everybody is broke at the end of the night because I'm a frozen face, impossible to read stone cold bluffing lying deceitful animal that can hold the same expression for 2 hours.
This may be my ticket out of poverty. Thanks.

Pokers tough to win at these days especially online. Even if ur a good player it's a long grind with minimal returns. Youd be much better off spending ur time at an actual job as a means for income. Unless u got a group of sucker friends or play in touristy type places like cruise ships it's not ur ticket out of poverty.

Reality. Thank you. I beat a room full of lawyers and think I'm good.
Thanks leaf. Work may be the solution.

I'm 24 now. Played fulltime from 21-23, 75ish hours a week live.
I live about 30 minutes from the Sands Casino in Bethlehem.
Been grinding Heads-up and MTT for the last 10 years on Bodog/Bovada. (gets a bad rap for good reason, but only had 2 checks bounce in all that time)
Thanks for the response. I am 24 as well and I would love to give it a whirl but I would have to do it live, I could not play online seriously for some reason (even on poker stars and full tilt when they were around). The problem is I now live in NC and there isn't anything remotely close to a casino in this state (Yes, there is Harrahs Cherokee but they use Poker Pro machines and that ain't happening.) Plus its over 2 hours away from me
I have thought about and even asked around about flying up to Philadelphia and playing at the Harrah's there in Chester for like 3 days/2 nights and just going on a poker binge. No partying, no other type of gambling, simply poker, and no fine dining or anything like that). I can get a plane ticket to Philly for $160 bucks...and I would be going solo. But I wonder if it would be worth it, I have to factor in 2 nights in a crappy hotel as well). Any opinions/thoughts on this? Thanks bud

If you're going to play online, you need to have programs that measure the style of play for each player. You can set different parameters and it allows you to gain a small advantage when playing online. One of the programs is ace hub, but I can't remember what the other one is called. You need to run both programs at the same time and it takes a whole to set up, but it is well worth it in the long run. You would also bedd to leave several tables open at one time to gain hand histories for each player, which goes towards your programs database, and then the program sorts out the info in an easy to read format for you. The programs place a bunch of stats above each players avatar.

I could be wrong but I think the other program is called poker tracker. Most players that are playing for real money use these programs. If your not using them, then you don't stand a chance

I've only been to Harrahs Casino once or twice, since it is like an hour from my house compared to 30 minutes from the sands. Its not bad at all. I've never stayed in a hotel around here, but I would assume prices can't be that bad.
To me, it all depends what you are trying to accomplish, and how big your bankroll is and what limit you are going to play. With airfare ($160 + hotel + minimal food) you are looking at a $300 hole to start out with.
If you really want to go on a poker binge, my advice would be to play for 30-40 hours straight (adderal would almost be a must) get a room for 1 night, sleep for like 18 hours and then try to put in another 40-50 hours.(until your flight home) Its a crazy grind, but if you are going to binge this is what I would do. You would only have to pay for 1 night hotel and you could put in almost 80 hours of poker. You could definitely come out on the +side..even though flight + hotel puts you at -ev.
Feel free to PM me any questions (idk if we are covers friends, but you dont need to be on my friend list to PM me) and let me know if you do decide to come to philly as I'll drive down and maybe meet up with you at the tables.

Isn't the physical presence of other humans a large part of the game? Expressions, movements, eyes...etc.

My dreams are shattered. Thought maybe I was on to something.
I look back at the last 5 years and really wish I would have spent them pursuing something else and I love poker as much as you possibly can.
To sum it up perfectly, " it is a tough way to make an easy living." I believe that statement to be as true as any words I ever read. My sincerest advice is to pursue another avenue. Most poker players I talk to feel the same way I do.

Yes. That would be true for a real life game with people sitting in front of you. I was referring to online poker where you can't see the people you are playing against.

Online poker and live poker are different games.
Online poker is all about betting patterns and hand history. These 2 factors make up about 95% of online poker.
Live poker is about those things too, but human interaction is a huge part. Betting patterns and Hand history are important but not as important as online because there are other things to consider.

True, online you have an HUD which gives you limitless info about the players you are up against. It is more like reading a stock report and making a decision then poker. Also the problem with playing on the big sites like PS and FTP in the old days was not just collusion and guys playing 16 tables at once just waiting for the nuts and grinding rake back . There were also thousands of players from eastern europe playing what we americans would consider penny ante poker but it was dead serious to them and they played very carefully and very well.
Live poker earth is right is much more nuanced and case specific.

I've played online poker on and off for almost 9 years now. I use to have the same fantasies about making a living playing poker but the simple truth is that I'm just not good enough. I've probably dropped enough money on poker in my lifetime to buy a new car, fully loaded.
It's a tough a game. A very tough game. It's also an extremely stressful game. The amount of things you need to learn is way beyond what you think. As earthwake said, 'it's a tough way to make an easy living'... so damn true.
These days, I'll throw a few bucks into PokerStars when I have the time and play in some of those big tournaments. I'll swing by the casino and play some limit poker and have some friendly chat at the tables. I have no fantasies anymore. Just enjoying the game for what is. All in good fun!
All that being said, when it comes the actual game itself, I feel as though all those years of play has made me a better then average player. At least I gained a bit of skill...
Good Luck!

search, my advice is this.
Enjoy the game for what it is. A game.

Thanks Canada for the insight, rest of you as well. I wouldn't last 30 minutes against you guys in the thread. My pursuit of moderate wealth is dillusional.
I'll stick to the simple fun games with these lawyers and try and make a buck or two. Honestly these guys are drunken arrogant targets.

tough to win and grind, some can do it though. its a whole new world w. 2-5 no limit games all over the place and 3-6, 6-12 games basically non existent anymore. when you sit down at a new table the first hand u show should be very weak or a bluff, this will get your table image as a loose cannon. hopefully.

low limit holdem??
3-6 . 4-8 6-12....
