LED tv's are LCD tv's that are backlit by LED's. They are better than the original flourescent-lit LCD's in that they produce better black levels, but they are still LCD. If you go for one I would suggest you get one with a 240hz refresh rate. I've watched sports on sets with 120hz rate & I can still see motion blur.
I like plasmas but you have to take a good look at them before you buy. Some have very reflective screens that can be annoying depending on how your room is lit.

One thing I found is that if you have a lot of light in the room you are putting the TV in, avoid a plasma. Plasma TV's have a big time glare. I just bought a Samsung LED smart TV 2 weeks ago and I am happy as hell.
