Many do not understand what makes a gambler tick. Usually it is the ones who are very conservative and do not feel comfortable taking risks in life, taking the safe comfortable route. I have tried it and being a box is not my style. Call me crazy but I just have confidence in my abilities so why not put it all on the line and see what happens?
And if it does not work out and sometimes it does not, just figure out a new plan and take some risks all over again! The gambling roller coaster is not a ride for most. It ruins more lives than crack but guys keep coming back for more. Making decisions and betting on it creates a rush that never gets old.
Instant money you do not have to work for is the prize and in some cases, it's not even about the money, it is a competitive thing. I myself have been in it since the elementary days. I had my own money from mowing yards and bought 2 scooters and a dirt bike by the time I was in 7th grade. It started around 4th grade with pencil crack where a wager is agreed upon, then each take turns trying to break the opponents pencil. Then we progressed to the coin flip game thanks to me being a front man for the game. Wager was agreed upon then each flips their coin while one calls odd or even, winning call wins. Around middle school again I was a front man for the dice games at school. Betting on Nintendo games was also a must. Those were the days and all of these games were prohibited thanks to us but we still found places to play. Then by the time I got to high school I had become a state level golfer. To keep us going day-to-day, we would always play for something. There truly is not a better motivator to improve than the desire not to lose and to beat the competitors. In my early days to today, I have bet on just about everything one can think of. Just because one grows old does not mean they lose that competitive feeling. Wagering on events fills that void of competition we once had.
Gambling is not limited just to money. A gambler could be someone who never takes the easy road in life or will just take a daily unknown shortcuts to achieve quick results.
I have been at the top and I know what rock bottom feels like. One thing is for sure a gambler spends a lot of time beating himself up mentally for lost bets and bad decisions. Take last night for me for example. Game 2 of the NBA semi-finals between San Antonio and the Clippers. I spent about an hour on the internet looking at numbers and match ups between MLB and NBA. I really can't lose right now so I am putting crazy pressure on myself. I narrowed it down to one bet and loaded all my eggs in one basket on the total over 194 on the Spurs game. The game was brutal to watch cause they were missing a lot of shots. I sweated it all the way to the last possession and needed either team to score a simple lay up. With 12 seconds to go, the total was sitting on 193! And remember I needed to have a total higher than 194 to win! Guess what happened? No basket was made and I lose my damn bet by one measly basket.
Nothing makes a gambler turn cold than to get screwed at the buzzer when victory was so close! I have ice running in my veins thanks to gambling. You just sit there in shock as to what just happened and takes some time to get your body chemical levels back down to normal. My first story I wrote on my site Dear Gambling sums up the forgiveness to the game a gambler must go through to live. Check it out.
But myself like other degenerate gamblers out there will always come back like we have amnesia or some shit and we are gonna win this time! It will be different this time! LOL! All it takes is a little time for the bad feelings of that tragic loss or bad week goes away and catch wind of some games line and it seems too good to be true! There is nothing more entertaining in life than to get some beer, roll up some blunts, and throw down a large bet you can't afford to lose. You have not experienced exciting until you get trashed watching a game on television and you need to win. Nothing beats it. It is a rush!

Gambling overall has been good to me not saying there have not been some hardships created by my risk taking. My issue has been money management because I love to find fun shit to spend my winnings on. I have collected thousands at times only to spend it quick then have a bad week. I may have been up lets say $2000 that month, I spent $1800 of it. Now I lose $500 and now I am in my pocket $300 feeling like a total loser. And I know some that have gone way off the deep end running up tabs knowing they could not pay just trying to dig themselves out just so they don't have to tell their wives or admit their losses. I actually knew an old friend who killed himself after hiding 6 figure gambling debts from his wife. I have no respect for guys who live two lives to keep their wife from getting pissed. Whether it be gambling, drugs, drinking or whatever, a man is a true box for getting himself into his fake life and it never ends well. But guys do it everyday. One thing I know is women I have dated or my family knows I hide nothing and am ashamed of nothing. I do what I do and if you do not like what I do, that is your loss. I am gonna be me and that will never change. But others sometimes think they can change someone as time goes on and I say to those people that they are retarded! I have changed at 32 a lot from my mentality at 20, but those changes came from me paying the price for some mistakes and did not want to go there again. And in some cases I still have not learned my lesson with some things because I have been a multiple offender.
The problem I have dealt with socially is I am an open book, I hide nothing and make jokes at my own expense to make others around me laugh. And when I hang out with people and acquaintances at bars and such, people are cool and attracted to my enviroment and spend most of their time with me laughing. But it is funny how when I am not around those same ass kissers use my openness to try to tell others that I am not shit and other things based on their own shitty lives to make me look bad.
My only guess is that a truly unhappy person just does not like to see someone be happy and laughing. I am viewed by these 2 faced shitheads as someone they would like to be because they have no idea how I do or pull off the things I do. Classic hater there scenario and I have too much experience with 2 faced losers. But when I show up these 2 faced losers are the first to come shake my hand and act friendly. They usually want something and problem is I am a fun generous guy when it comes to having fun so they have the nerve to talk shit about me then want me to do them favors, never a good outcome and somehow I look like the bad guy when I call them out. Funny how that works when you present truth to someone who is unhappy and in severe denial of their own life.
I may not be in the best position as of today but that will change. I know this, even when things are not tip-top. I can have a smile on my face and make others laugh. That can't be said for the shitheads because they will always be unhappy.
For those unhappy fucks that do not understand me or other gamblers, keep on hating and being in denial of your own problems. And I will keep having a good time and I will always make sure you will have something to talk about.
But you can bet on one thing. I will have some laughs, take some risks others won't take, gamble here and there, smoke a few blunts, and get my dick wet. Do not ever bet against that because it is in my blood.

I guess the answer is to separate the good things out and leave the "gamble" behind.
Sure sounds like you are very self-aware and understand where you go wrong.
The hardest question for gamblers to answer honestly is "why do I gamble". If you can answer that honestly - and it is because of entertainment, addiction, or rush - then you are doomed. If you can answer that honestly and it is for profit - then you can make it work.
Good luck Salty. You are a great poster here at covers.

1. Bet on sports that you are good at, don't bet on sports you are bad at. 2. Bankroll money management. You should only be betting 1% to 10% of your total bankroll. 3. Never bet on heavily juiced lines. Like a line at -1000 for example. 4. Never bet on heavily valued lines. Like a terrible team at 100 to 1 odds to win championship. 5. Teams with home field/court advantage tend to win games, especially in football. 6. Be a strategic gambler by picking your spots and wait for the right opportunity. Never be an impulsive gambler by betting for the action or just because it's your favorite team. 7. Stay emotionless all the time. Bet like a robot. There's no place for emotions in this profession. 8. Parlays "against the spread" should be no longer than 2 teams. Secure your first pick before moving on to your second pick. 9. Teasers should never pass through the zero. 10. Sportsbooks make money off of both Sharp plays and Square plays because all lines are juiced. Sharp plays make money off of Square plays. 11. Always make your bet near game time. Players could get injured during the week before game time. 12. Sportsbook have an edge on the NFL than the NCAAF because they can focus on the 32 NFL teams but cannot focus on the hundreds of NCAAF teams. 13. Never deposit money for sportsbook bonus money that requires rollover. You are immediately juiced before you even placed your first bet. 14. Never bet on preseason games on any sport. Predicting a 2nd string or 3rd string team is stupid. 15. Gambling is similar to the stock market. Buy when it's cheap, sell when it's expensive.
If you are extremely impulsive and egotistical. The best advice is to "Don't Gamble".

Today I heard a story about a bank robber named Willie Sutton. Never heard of the guy, so I looked him up on google. What I found was that he robbed banks in the late 1920's and early 1930's.
The thing that is interesting was that Willie was an adrenaline junkie.
Listen to some of his quotes and he sounds EXACTLY like a gambling degenerate...
"Why did I rob banks? Because I enjoyed it. I loved it. I was more alive
when I was inside a bank, robbing it, than at any other time in my life.
I enjoyed everything about it so much that one or two weeks later I'd
be out looking for the next job. But to me the money was the chips,
that's all"
The need for an adrenaline rush has to be one of the most addicting sensations for any human being. Like a moth to the flame.

I think the biggest thing with gambling is being able to control it, which isnt easy to do. Its so addictive it can take over your life without you realizing it. Pretty soon you dont care about xmas dinner with your family because you have the Celtics +2 and they are down 4 with a minute left or you are out with your girl and cant take your eyes off the phone because you have the over 8 in the Dodgers game and its tied at 3 in the 8th......You spend hours looking at stats/matchups that usually wind up meaningless because the qb gets hurt or the kicker has an off day.....
Find a happy medium. I really enjoy college bball and football, so thats what I focus on. April-August are my down months because baseball season is a fucking grind and not worth the effort imo.

Interesting read Salty. I often wonder, with respect to sports gambling if Ego, does not trump adrenaline as a motivation to play?
The one I cant get my head wrapped around and will probably lead me to calling it a day is, as a parent of two small children, how do you explain to them why on Thursday you are cheering for the New Jersey Devils, yet today, now you like the New York Rangers better.....

i wish I never got hooked on gambling. Just for the amount of time i've wasted and stress it has caused alone. Hitting a 12 team parlay for 12,500 in the nfl got me hooked and i've been coming back for more ever since.
