According to this article, CERN has measured particles as moving faster than the speed of light:
GENEVA (Reuters) - An international team of scientists has recorded
neutrino particles traveling faster than the speed of light, a spokesman
for the researchers said on Thursday -- in what could be a challenge to
one of the fundamental rules of physics.
Antonio Ereditato, who works at the CERN particle physics center on
the Franco-Swiss border, told Reuters that measurements over three years
showed the neutrinos moving 60 nanoseconds quicker than light over a
distance of 730 km between Geneva and Gran Sasso, Italy.
"We have high confidence in our results. But we need other colleagues to do their tests and confirm them," he said.
If confirmed, the discovery would overturn a key part of Albert
Einstein's 1905 theory of special relativity, which says that nothing in
the universe can travel faster than light.

Shouldn't the mass of the particle get infinitely smaller as it approaches the speed of light if e=mc2 is true? How exactly will this be replicated and tested, its not like there are CERN's sitting around everywhere.
If it ends up being true, this will be hands down the most important scientific finding of our lifetimes. Period.

If it's true sparty, the fundamental laws of physics will have to be re-written as they all operate under the assumption that nothing can travel faster than the speed of light.

Kapono, It would be certainly a major find... mostly because of Einsteins fame. But what is the impact for we as people? Nothing in our daily lives will change with this advance in knowledge. However... down the road it could lead to deep space exploration... which is futile if light speed is the max. Yes some will mention the warping of space/time... but the amount of energy needed is massive to make it practical.

True sparty, warp drives are a long way away into the future, but according to physics, it is a probability. Then there are always the thought of worm holes which exists, however only at sub atomic levels.

Actually, mass increases towards infinity as you approach the speed of light.

Its not that nobody cares, its just nobody on covers understands the importance of this find but you. We're not a bunch of Einsteins homie, we're a bunch gambling junkies.

Why it's hard to believe - everything is linked to that law so have we been just lucky to avoid big disasters?

There are more Einsteins on here than you would think, Cave

I have to admit, physics was never my strong suit, but how could they supposedly accelerate something 60 nanoseconds faster than light if that theory is correct?

Altho this discovery amazed me, i was more impressed from what i read few months ago - that they actually succeeded in keeping anti-matter for more than 10 minutes. Previously, they only kept it for just couple of seconds.
There is no worp drive nor advanced space exploration without the anti-matter as a energy source
Now i am expecting ( i hope ) for a few discovery of Element 115, i hope they will succeed in keeping it stable for a longer period and explore its possibilities. This is a must for sub-space travel ( space distorsion )...plus the anti-matter fuel = worp speeds...

I just did a little work and found out that neutrinos are nearly massless (or possibly massless?) and they may not interact with matter. So I guess we're kind of righ the fringe with this new discovery....if it's true.
I love this stuff, but it takes me a time to absorb some of the technical stuff. Survived a year of college Calculus....barely survived high school Physics.

I would recommend the following books for you, Hutch:
Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking Universe in a Nutshell by Stephen HawkingThe Day We Found the Universe by Marcia Bartusiak
The Day We Found the Universe is one of my top 5 favorite books that I have read in the last 15 years.... awesome science writing, cannot recommend it highly enough
