.....This is so fucked up....These fuckers watch a home go up in flames with animals inside and don't do anything because there is a $75 tax fee that residents outside the area must pay....Just an unbelieveable story here....

this is very shitty but...

Cranick lives outside of the city limits and he admits that he forgot to pay a $75 annual service fee that would have provided him with fire protection.

if everyone outside the town limits decided not to pay the $75 fee (insurance policy) maybe there would be no fire department

this man and his neighbors were given a choice given where he lives. he chose to gamble and not pay the fee. sort of like not having car insurance and getting into an accident and having a lien placed on your house to cover the other driver's medical costs

i dont mean to sound heartless...what if i and others chose not to pay property taxes to fund fire and police then expected them to come running when we called or state income taxes or federal income taxes. not sure how this is different

I see your point and totally understan, but this is a fire and not a luxury like auto insurance. I say put the fire out and bill the man the $75...Plus he stated that he was willing to pay whatever it took to the fire fighters and it went on deaf ears....

so if i pay the fee, how many minutes (critical minutes) do they waste trying to determine if i should have my house fire put out?? While i agree it was their decision not to have the service, it still does not sit well with me. What if there was a person inside??

how do you get auto insurance after you get into an accident for the same rate you would have had the day before?

is home insurance a mandate? in NJ it is, just as car insurance is. not really luxuries

No sympathy. The cheapskates did not pay the $75, so the blame is with them.

If everybody had that same cheapskate mentality there would have been no service at all, for the community. Why should others pay to cover his arse.

No insurance company would insure this jack off without proof of having fire protection.

The difference is Fire & Police departments are a public service for the community and are not discriminated against. As for auto insurance it is not. The fact of the matter is that they could have helped and didn't and they could have sent him a bill for the help after they assisted. The guy was telling them that he would pay whatever it was for them to help him. I think this is cruelty if you ask me. They let animals burn inside and human being lost all his possessions because of $75.

No different than a hospital having to care for someone who is injured even though they have no insurance.

im pissed that this happened but like every other government agency, this is a unionized monopoly racket

try and start a competing fire company on a subscription basis and see if you dont end up with your knees broken...sort of like ADT but for fire instead of break ins

from what i read, many rural areas have subscription based fire services.

maybe all should be volunteer. think about it, these people probably paid property taxes, state and county taxes and more and the fire was still a "for pay/subscription" service. if it was volunteer, they would all come and work regardless

nice to see these guys were just following orders by not putting out the fire...nice nuremburg defense

There is no excuse for this.  He could have been taken to court later for the fee.  It's just a move to teach someone they didn't like a lesson.

i dont disagree

however...what if there were two fires in the same town at the same time yet only one truck (i dont know the specifics of the town)

who's house do you go to first? the one who paid the subscription fee right? or the other one? or is it based on some pre determined criteria of need?

i think in this country we're so used to socialized services that when someone makes a free market choice and loses, we dont know how to react other than to blame the group that "should" have been serving him

We country people have long learned to pay the fee for out-of-area fire calls.  I pay to support my Voluntary Fire Department.  They should have a policy that they will fight the out-of-area fires but the law should allow for them to bill the homeowner for the total time etc.and put a lien on the property if not paid.

their pets died in the fire, what if a child was asleep upstairs? 75 bucks worth a kid's life? welcome to teabagger hell, "no taxes!!" and then you pay twice as much for all the services you got in the first place. these moron redneck right wingers voted against their best interests and got what they deserved. 75 bucks for fire and another 75 for police, 75 bucks for animal control.... it all adds up and it probably adds up to more than they paid in their original taxes. you think privatizing is the answer? they privatized feeding and housing the soldiers in Iraq, it worked out sweet for kellogg brown and root (halliburton), but not so sweet for the soldiers that ate spoiled and contaminated food and it wasnt sweet for the US taxpayer that paid top dollar with COST PLUS. click the link and read about the lawsuit against halliburton. corporations could give two fucks about the quality of life or even saving a life, it's all about the bottom line. you really want them dispensing the everyday services of police and fire depts?

dude - what if no one in the rural areas paid the fee, yet everyone expected service in the name of human decency?

let me know so i can tell my town and county to F off when they expect me to write a check for fire and police every quarter. i figure i may as well take the gamble as well and just expect service in the name of decency

i'm not defending the fire company nor berating the family. this whole thing sucks.

the fire dept should be all volunteer. none of this would have happened and there would have been no subscript fee. everyone can donate to their local fire dept for upkeep and repairs of the truck like we did in the town where i grew up

he knew full well that if you live in a rural area of tennessee he would NOT get fire service if he didnt pay the fee

yep, its a teabagger hell when every service that our taxes pay for are broken up into paying for each individually, not cost effective and a pure nightmare.  75 bucks for health inspections too?  how much for school? even you dummy righties understand how bad of an idea this is right?

what if he only paid 40 bucks worth? do they save half his house?

if you had two houses do you pay $150?

Think of it as PBS. Many people watch PBS who haven't contributed; enough people do contribute to PBS to keep the channel on the air. Sure, some people are free-loading...

However, in this case we are talking about someone (the fire dept) that is in a position to help and wouldn't. This isn't about the free-load watching of some TV station...we are potentially taking about life and death here!

If I was on that fire truck and saw someone's house burning down, I would grab a hose and try and put the frigging fire out. I really wouldn't care if someone had forgotten/intentionally whatever to pay some $75...
