Should be an ''automatic''.
Keeping the HIT KING outta' the hallowed hall just doesn't seem right.
I think he bet on the games, I don't think he fixed the games.
When he managed the REDS, I'm sure if Tom SEAVER had a no hitter going into the 7th inning & he yanked him for a releif pitcher with a 8.72 era, red flags would have sprouted up all over.
Put him in....the hall has enshrined sinners long before PETE ROSE.

If we went on numbers alone, like the other sports do, it's a no brainer. He's in. The problem right now is, he's not even eligible. If he ever get reinstated, he might get in.

3. Player shall have ceased to be an active player in the Major Leagues at least five (5) calendar years preceding the election but may be otherwise connected with baseball.
4. hey THAWV
Thanks for shedding some light on this.
I think the sport of baseball is doing themselves
a great dis-service by keeping him out. But PETE also did some damage too, by denying everything for all those years. Maybe PETE shoulda' said ''I'm not here to talk about the past'' or he should have pretended he no longer knew how to speak english.
I think maybe some year (decade) he'll get in, it'd be nice if they did it while he was alive.

O6..........the first thing that needs to be done, is to get a commish with the balls to lift his lifetime ban. Then he can be put on the ballot. If Giamotti had not died, the ban was going to be lifted one year after Rose signed the agreement to be banned. Only time will tell.

I'm glad they have kept him out. If the HOF stands for more than just on-field accomplishments, he has no business there. IMO, the one thing you can't mess with is the integrity of the game & there's no doubt he bet for & against his team - as a manager & probably as a player as well.

When it comes to ''integrity'' in MLB, they kinda' pissed that away.
The MLB HOF already hosts a few womanizers, drunks & racists.
With the STEROID ERA officially under investigation, they are now shifting in to ''salvage mode''.
Thank god for Cal Ripken & TonyGwynn. The upcoming ballots might consist of some questionable inductees.

Always been questionable characters (even criminals) back to Ty Cobb & before. Alot more now, but I don't mean personal integrity, I'm talkin about the integrity of the game & the violation or even strong/obvious appearance of it. Just don't think it would be a good thing or they should bestow the highest honor given in the game to a guy that messed with it, no matter how great he was.

I think to much has been made of it.Take his on field accomplishments, the all time hit leader, and the way he played the game. There are others in the HOF in both BB and FB that had shady areas also. Is it ok that Mickey Mantle admitted he played games drunk,if he did or not,he was one of the greatest players and rightly deserved to be in. Chamberlain saying he slept with 10,000 women, does that take away from his court skills,no,he deserves to be in the NBA HOF also. Although alot of players in all leagues might be a little unethical at times in their careers,I think they should be judged on what they did during their playing careers. If we had a MLB with a set of balls ,Pete Rose would be in,but we're dealing with a bum in Bud Selig. The best to happen to baseball is to get rid of Selig.

Not a big fan of Selig's, but you're not gettin it. Could care less about any of the personal behaviour except what would adversely affect the integrity of the game. That's why gambling on a sport one is personally & directly involved in has always been the cardinal sin. Whether he was unfairly targeted or not, they had the goods on Rose & he finally admitted it only cause he thought it might help him get in and/or get back in baseball.
The tragic irony of it was that he always played the game all-out & with the kind of no-holds barred respect for the game that gave the fan their full money's worth. Still, unless nothing matters except performance, Giammatti made the right decision & it should be upheld IMO. Otherwise, hell, nothing matters much & if there was a HOF for NBA refs & if this crooked NBA ref's peers all agreed he was one of the best refs of all time, he should go into it.

no matter what they did off the field ,I say they got to be voted on what they did while playing. Guys in the NFL hall have been known to run illegal books after they quit playing and they are still in. Rose has to be in based on what he did playing the game. Bottom line is still Selig sucks as commissioner and needs to be removed, and not just because of the Rose stuff.

Can't believe you guys can't see the difference in gambling on the sport one is directly involved in as a player/mgr & anything someone does that doesn't affect the game or after they are no longer involved. It compromises the integrity of the game itself & if anything should carry a ban, that would be it.

And since we're all gamblers, do you really believe he wasn't betting on baseball as a player & only bet on the Reds as manager?
