I have been saying this for years! The FG is not a football play. It is a carnival act. It is not running, passing or tackling. It is not performed by the players who play the rest of the game. And yet it decides the winner. Traditionalists won't hear of this, but real traditionalists would agree it's a freak play and why let it decide who wins and who loses.

Why not. Just start on the 20 like they now do on 85% of NFL kickoffs from the 35 anyway.

Or you can still kickoff. Kickoff kickers rarely decide the game like FGs often do.

it is hard to watch a hard fought game come down to field goals and it sucks for a kicker to lose for his team...that miss st missed PAT sure kicked me in the balls,i had -6.5 on that game...

would we need to change the name of the sport though? It really shouldnt be football if kicking for scoring was removed from the basic tenets of the game

I would also eliminate the DBs.This way there would be no DB tackling OS receiver at the 1 yard line.

I think overtime should be like the old NFL quarterback challenge. Bring out moving targets with bullseyes on them and see which QB can hit more targets. Whoever's QB hits more targets wins the game. I know this might sound ridiculous, but it is less insane than your moronic idea. Special teams are 1/3 of the game. Might as eliminate defense as well.

If the game is a tie then a tug of war between the two teams at mid field 10 men per side!!!

A QB throwing the ball between two very narrow goal posts would at least be decided by one of the real players in the game. It would be less silly than the FG. At least a free throw in Bball or a Penalty shot in hockey are plays similar to the game made by a regular player in the game. A FG and those goal posts have NOTHING to do with the rest of the game.

I admit it will never be changed. I can only hope FGs will become 100% accurate so no team will have to play their guts out  blocking, tackling, running and passing, only to lose because of missing one.

I also admit it is dramatic and at times tragic, so it does make for good theater. Just feel bad for the tragic kicker and losing team.

It's amazing what people come up with when they lose a bet.

I don't necessarily agree but I don't get why it's worth half as much as a touch down!!!   That's crazy to me!

Is the NFL telling us that failing to get past the 25-30 yeard line (i'm assuming that's average FG range) is worth half as much as actually getting into the end zone??!!?!?

It should be like in Aussie Rules Football, which I think is a better game than ours anyways. Skinnier goal posts! If you get it between the inside posts, give 3 points. If it's inside the outside posts, it's only worth 1 point.

Promotes less punting and a higher risk of scoring less by FG.

Might as well. Retards cant make 40 yd fg in college on a regular basis, much less when everything is on the line

Virginia Tech out-plays Michigan but loses as their kicker misses a 37 yarder in OT.

Certainly that roughing the punter penalty and ensuing fumble on the kickoff return in the 1H were also to blame.

Tough loss for them as for Stanford.
