I won't be around for most of the day today, so I wanted to get this in as soon as I could.
Very nice night last night as write-ups were 2-0 and overall my personal wagers went 4-2 bringing home a whopping 0 units! Never have I been at 0. Bad move on my part with the big 2H wager on the Over in Utah/TCU game.
Onto tonights action. I caution everyone to be aware of and avoid the old "Smoke and Mirrors" when looking at tonights games.

Louisville at Connecticut
Line: Louisville -3
O/U: 60
As with last nights game, i did not expect that Louisville would be going into UConn tonight toting a 4-3 record. Nor did I think that UConn would be sitting at 5-1. Actually, I had them at 6-0 at this point! I did not expect Virginia to beat them when I looked at the schedules this year. Last year, both of these teams were very good to me, and I thought that this year would be the same. While UConn certainly has the better record in this matchup, there is not a person on this earth who could convince me that they are actually the better team.
Offense
Louisville, despite their record, is still Louisville when it comes to the offensive side of the ball. As a team they are averaging 41.7 PPG on 559.6 YPG of offense. they are posting 397.7 YPG through the air and 161.9 YPG on the ground. I think everyone expected the Cardinal passing game to fly high, but I do not think that most people were giving the ground attack as much credit as it may have deserved. Heisman hopeful, and yes he still has a shot, and probably soon to be Falcon QB, Brian Brohn has not dissappointed this year. He has thrown for 2765 yards on a 67.7% completion percentage. He has tossed 23 TDs in 7 games and has only been picked 4 times. Last week against Cincinatti he threw for 350 yards and 3 TDs on 28-38 or 74% completion percenatge. He certainly benefited from the return of Harry Douglas who hauled in 7 receptions for 118 yards. The return of Douglas was huge last week, and should be as big this week as he leads the teram with 45 receptions and 797 yards. In the running game, Anthony Allen has been the workhorse for the Cardinals as he has produced 602 yards rushing and 7 TDs this year.
UConn has proven to be no slouches offensively this year either as they are averaging an impressive 33.2 PPG. They are generating 375.2 YPG on 211.5 YPG passing and 163.7 YPG on the ground. They too are lead by their QB, Tyler Lorenzen who has thrown for 1259 yards completing 61.9% of his passes. He has 7 TDs and 3 picks. Last week against Virginia however, the offense sputtered in what was their sternest competition of the year. they were only able to generate 254 total yards of offense which was over 100 yards below their average. Also, they committed 2 turnovers and only converted on 1 of 13 third down situations. The backfield for the Huskies is handled by committee with Donald Brown and Andre Dixon both gaining over 300 yards so far this year. D Brown missed the game against Virginia with an ankle injury, and may not play tonight.
Defense
No doubt about the fact that the Louisville defense has performed well below what was expected of them this year. they are surrendering 29.7 PPG on 446.7 total yards of offense! That total has been especially bad against the pass as they have allowed 289.1 YPG passing, and just as bad against the run allowing 157.6 YPG on the ground. They have given up 40 points or more in 3 of their 7 games and currently rank 100th in the country in total defense. the lone bright spot for the defense came last week against ranked Cincinatti as they forced 4 turnovers, even though they were again gashed for 460 total yards. Turnovers have been important for the defense as they have generated 17 on thee year or 2.4 per game. The one standout defensively has been L Myles as he has been the number one tackler on the team with 78. Last week he had 12 tackles in the Cardinal win.
Conversely, the Huskie defense has been phenominal. they allow a meager 12 PPg on the year. They are currently surrendering 264.2 YPG total with 165.2 through the air and 99 on the ground. they too have forced 17 turnovers this year with 13 of those turnovers coming on interceptions. Last week against Virginia, the defense forced 3 turnovers and surrendered only 332 total yards in a losing battle. The defense is lead by L Wilson who is the team leader in tackles with 62 on the year.
Summary
As I said in the beginning of my post, do not get lost in the "Smoke and Mirrors" this game presents. UConn is putting together a nice year, but as I said, I expected them to come into tonights game with a perfect 6-0 record. You must realize that their 5-1 record is really not all that impressive when you factor in that the 5 teams they have beaten have a combined 9 wins on the year. Also, I personally watched the entire game against Temple. Temple came into Huskie land and basically won the game! In one of the worst calls I have seen all year, the refs and the replay determined that the Owls receiver was out of the endzone on what to me was an obvious TD reception with 40 seconds left to play which with the extra point would've given Temple a 5 point lead. I am sure that UConn overlooked Temple, but they were very, and I me very fortunate to come away with the Win. Louisville has truely dissappointed me, as there was no way in hell I saw them losing to Syracuse or Utah. The Kentucky loss I can handle because (A) I thought it would be a very tight game, and (B) it is the same Kentucky team that knocked of LSU. Let's not confuse those losses with the UConn wins however. UConn has not faced a team yet this year that is anywhere near as talented and capable as Louisville. Yes Louisville has struggled mightily on the defensive side of the ball, but they can still run and gun with any team in the country offensively. The UConn defense, while statistically looks great, has seen nothing in the way of QB as it is going to see tonight. There is no doubt that Brohm is a first round draft pick and could very well go #1. The Huskie defense is in for a rude awaking and I fully expect Louisville to go up and down the field, regardless of the weather conditions. Louisville plain and simple just has way too many atheletes and weapons offensively for UConn to keep up. I say that only because Lorenzen does not have the ability to throw the ball 35-40 times a game which is what it takes to beat Louisville. Syracuse did it, Utah did it, and Kentucky did it, UConn won't.
With upcoming games against South Florida, Rutgers, Cincinatti, Syracuse, and West Virginia I expect UConn will finish the year with one more win and it will not be tonight. 6-6 ain't so bad when playing the 2H schedule they have.
With upcoming games against Pittsburgh, West Virginia, South Florida, and Rutgers I expect Louisville has 2 more wins to add to their record with the first one being tonight at UConn. 6-6 is quite a disappointment for any Louisville fan.

No time for write-up on this one, but starting QB is out for EMU and a freshman is in.
Northwestern at EMU
Line: Northwestern -10
O/U: 58
Quickly need to note that EMU is 1-3 out of league play this year and is coming of of an 0-3 road trip. Additionally, their starting QB Andy Schmitt is out tonight with a shoulder injury.
Northwestern can flat out score. They really don't stop anybody, but against a freshman QB they should perform much better defensively.
With 2 quality wins in the last 2 weeks, look for NW to handle it's business tonight.

PIDI, the info I see says the EMU QB is a gametime decision. Is he out for sure? EMU has not won a non conference game since 2005 and they have never beaten a Big 10 team. They are playing at Detroit's Ford Field tonight right? Thanks!

I agree on NW, be careful with Louisville .

With no smoke & mirrors, Uconn should win this game tonight by 7-10 points. I'll pull for you to cover the teaser though.

Ricker...who has UCONN played? I'll answer that for ya...nobody. Look at their schedule. They have won 5 games against teams that have a combined 9 wins. 9 wins...combined! And there defense has not seen an offense anywhere near that of Louisville. UCONN's season from here on out will be extremely tough and they will lose most of their remaining games.
