Never really understood why it is OK to collide with the catcher in order to make him drop the ball, but it is not at any other base.  Because the catcher is wearing equipment? So what?  He has shin guards and a chest protector for guarding against baseballs, not some truck running at him at full speed. No wonder why the Twins don&#x27;t want Mauer playing catcher, why would any team put their franchise at the only position where there is one sided collisions?

That kid gets hit as soon as he steps up to the plate! Giants pitchers are going to bounce a heater off his ear. Thats baseball right? Giants are a sub 500 team without Posey IMO.

It&#x27;s because the catcher is blocking the plate. If you don&#x27;t want your catcher to get into a collision, then have to catch the ball in front of the plate on a play like that.

It actually is legal at every base to run into a fielder in an attempt to jar the ball out.  I&#x27;ve seen it done at first base a few times on bunt plays where the fielder is trying to tag the batter (remember A-Rod&#x27;s girly swipe?), but if you do it at second or third base, you&#x27;re more likely to fall off the base.

Yea, but A-Rod was ruled out because he did intentionally try to jar the ball loose, so its not legal.  Either way, it isn&#x27;t acceptable to plow over the fielder even if he is blocking 2nd base, they are supposed to slide thru them spikes up or whatever. I understand that it is acceptable to dp this at home, I just don&#x27;t think it should be, its moronic.  Its the only base where the throw can beat you by 20 feet and you still have a chance to be safe if you can linebacker the ball out of his glove

Don&#x27;t block the plate.  Their gear isn&#x27;t enough to protect that much of an impact.  For one f&#x27;ing out, it isn&#x27;t worth the risk.

&#xD;&#xA;I have watched that replay many times and Cousins could have slid across. I agree that not blocking the plate is the way to go, but he didn&#x27;t fully block the plate.

&#xD;&#xA;Agreed. However, the replay clearly shows Cousins lowering his shoulder with the intent to use Posey as a tackling dummy. I&#x27;ll be surprised if MLB approves his method of trying to get to home plate on that play.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that play. Its an unfortunate accident.

This same exact type of play has happened thousands of times in the history of MLB. It is unfortunate that his leg got caught under his body.

There is no reason for MLB to change teh rules or implement a Posey rule just because of this play. Also home plate is the only base you are allowed to do such a thing. A fielder cannot block any other base and if they do it is obstructing the runner and the runner is awarded that base. A fielder, if htere is a play at the base, can use his leg or something to block the base but he cannot stand in the basepath and obstruct the runner, the runner has the right of way.
