This article might also bring some light to the people who have an unrealistic view about teams and their low payrolls to begin with.... It has nothing to do with not spending money but properly positioning your team to spend money when the time comes to make a push for a playoff spot.
I have time and time again tried explaining service time, team control, and arbitration and how that plays a role in team payroll but it doesn't seem to get through to some.
Here is a perfect example of a young team with talent who has extremely low payroll yet does not indicate that the payroll will continue to be that low and in no way shows they are not willing to spend.
A majority of the low payroll teams have a similar team make up where they are comprised of many younger players who are under team control and have not reached arbitration yet. These types of players keep payroll flexibility and provide a service at a fraction of the cost, that a FA would cost, yet give the team a player capable of producing similarly as the more expensive FA (who do not have upside or growth).

All this shows is that the O's have $40 million in commitments for next season and they have the room, by not making nonsense FA signings and spending, to extend/sign the younger players when they start becoming expensive.
Their whole roster, outside of 5 players, are under team control and at league minimum contracts.
Just painting the picture so when reality hits Sparky and Papi in the face 2-3 years down the road. All of those players are going to have significant pay increases which will increase team payroll.
Writer of the article, guessing it flew over everyones head, basically is saying the Orioles are in the best position of jsut about any franchise with the talent they have comprised for the extremely low cost now. It will allow them to keep those pieces for long term and have the flexibility to sign FA to supplement the talent.

You were the dumb ass that thought that signing Texieria was going to be a great signing for the O's.......Guess who told you that it would not because all of the money he would cost (ME).

Flip-flopper ... You must have the definition confused cause I have not flip flopped.
Lets see... You said last year Adam Jones was not and would nto be an All Star or GG.... You were wrong with that. You claimed Weiters was overrated and would not be a top catcher in the league.... He put up some very nice stats after coming up and focusing SOLELY on calling the game and working on with his pitchers instead of hitting.
You called Felix Pie atrocious and he put up very respectable numbers. I know you are going to pull up the first half of his season and try to discount what he did but thats because you will not acknowledge that he pretty much stopped playing for 2 months while Crowley adjusted his whole hitting approach and mechanics. After he started playing, after making those adjustments, he had an OPS over .800.
Tex would have been a great signing. It would have sped up the process that McPhail is spending his time crafting. Even with Tex's contract the O's would have a payroll in the $55-60mm range. Still plenty, plenty of space and payroll flexibility to sign the youngsters.
Papi thinking the O's are a small market and can't spend Papi ignoring everything he blasted me for last offseason and then his "view" of what would happen being wrong
Papi thinking that because the O's have not done much the past 10 years they will never again
Papi not realizing the Orioles had the worst farm system and player development in the whole league less than 4 years ago and now a top 10 farm system in just 3 years time since McPhail, Stockstill, and Joe Jordan took over
Papi not being able to debate baseball without name calling

My god you are an idiot.......Please find where I stated these things....
I never said that Weiters would never be a top catcher.....But said he would not blossum up into the major leagues and be a Piazza.....Like I said he did not.....He finally came on at the end and hit at a decent average.....
I dont think I ever said that Adam Jones would never be a ALL Star or GG either.....I know I did disagree with you because you thought he was superman out there.....
Felix Pie is atrocious no matter how you want to look at it......Hitting jacks off of late season call ups dont mean shit to me.
You do not comprehend at all very well.......When you are focusing on being under 80 Mill every year in the AL East then yea you are a small market team....I never said your owner did not have money....Hell all owners have money....
Your triple A team dont mean shit to me......Bring up a real major league baseball club and then come and talk to me ......
Sorry Skrimp......Not sure why you have to be a fan of this team with this clown.

Adam Jones was a stud for 1 season...let's see if he has a hangover. I think he'll be good...but not great.
Who cares if the O's spend money...if you can't get your hometown hero to come to Baltimore, how will you get top notch players to come? No chance in hell the O's could EVER outbid the Yankees or Red Sox for a top of the line free agent. Anyone that they would get is not good enough to play for New York or Boston.
Weiters is a future stud...I doubt he'll be Joe Mauer caliber, even though that is ultra high expectations.
I have a question for you jpero...what exactly do you consider to be a "contender"? Unless the O's make the playoffs, in my eyes, and I assume in Papi's eyes as well, that does not quality as a "contender" or at least to the level of what you're touting the O's as.

hey jerk off just cause a team has a low payroll doesn't mean the team doesn't have money to pay superstars
Not sure who you are talking to........NO ONE said that the Orioles did not have money......I have said repeatedly that they may have the money but they dont choose to use it the same way the big boys in the AL East use it.....

And by Big boys you mean the Yankees and Red Sox? As in 2 teams that can spend the most based on where they are located, one more so than the other.
No one can spend like the Yankees, first off and Red Sox are in the next teir of spenders.
Can you name other big spenders so I can debunk your once again wrong thinking....

Orioles: $72mm (high of $93.4mm in 2007)... but Papi is right they wont and choose not to spend, even when they spend over $90mm in a year when they had a worse team, talent wise than they will have in 2 years, if they keep their young core and they continue to develop.
Tigers:$76.2mm (high of 137.7mm) eliminate the past 3 years and their average would be in the high 50s-low 60s
Angels: $80.5mm (high $119.2mm)
White Sox: $77.4mm (high $121.2mm)
Blue Jays: $67.9mm (high $97.8mm)
I can keep going and show you the Orioles spend more than you believe. I have also explained countless times that Angelos stopped spending freely after the Albert Belle contract debacle and when the farm system was worthless/worst in the majors they started to build their farm system and rebuidl the franchise from the bottom up instead of the continued cycle of signing FA who are expensive and do nothing for long term success and stability.

talk about rose colored, bias lenses you are looking through with taht bolded statement. You are basically saying that the Orioles and any team not named the Yankees or Red Sox cannot and will never be able to sign a premier FA because those players will only want to play for those franchises.
Albet Pujols will not be signing with the Yankees when he is a FA. Pedroia wont. You can come up with a bunch of players who are better than current Yankee players that would not sign with the Yankees when/if they are FA and its becasue the Yankees already have pieces in place.
And as far as contenders... Do you not consider the Rangers, Rays, or Detriot contenders this year just because they didn't make the playoffs?
Or were the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Twins not contenders the year before because they missed the playoffs?
Detroit, Seattle, and the Jays in 2007?
White Sox, Angels, Red Sox, Jays in 2006?

I love how you bolded the least important point I was trying to get across. And of course the Yanks wouldn't get Pujols or Pedroia...first off...Pedroia is a Red Sock, so that kinda eliminates your point. And the Yanks have Tex and wouldn't sign Pujols.
So let me ask you...the Yankees and Orioles both offered Pujols a $300 million contract ($100 million over EVERYONE else)...who would he sign with?
The Orioles won't be contenders because they would never compete for a whole season. The Jays weren't contenders this entire season. They started off hot and got nothing from it. The Rays weren't really contenders either. The Tigers were contenders...the Rangers weren't, imo, because they faulted before mid September. You need to realize that if you can't compete for a full season, you are not a contender. And there is not chance the O's compete for a full season. Maybe half a season...but that's where it ends.
You really have to stop getting your hopes up...it's going to be a long fall back to reality when you realize the best your team will be is slightly over .500.

How could you say a team can't be contenders if they dont make the playoffs but then you say the tigers this year were contenders but they faltered at the end fo the season (aka did not compete the whole season).... The Rangers had a better record than teh Tigers yet you did not consider them contenders....
In your eyes the Yankees were contenders 2 years ago when they missed the playoffs but if that was any other team they would not be considered contenders....
Explain what a contender in your eyes is because apparently you pick and chose despite certain teams having better records.
Also NO BASEBALL TEAM competes and is at the top of their game all season. Injuries and slumps and hot streaks occur all the time in baseball fo every team. Over the course of the season the best teams rise to the top and overcome the luck of lesser talented teams.
In yoru scenerio he would sign with the Orioles because they would have 1st open adn the Yankees would not.... Also you ahve no idea what Pujols is thinking. he could absolutely despise the Yankees (liek Tex did the Red Sox for how they screwed him over to start his professional career and he got the laugh last this past winter)

OK...let me rephrase my initial statement. Teams that are contenders are classified as teams who fight for the most part of the season. The Rays were not contenders last season because they fell out of the race in August I believe. The Orioles won't be contenders because they won't be able to compete for even a month. And hey...if your content with the O's "contending" and not making the playoffs, then all the power to you, I won't argue with you anymore. But if you still think the Orioles will make the playoffs, then I'll continue to argue with you for the next "2-3 years".
Bad example...the Yanks probably wouldn't offer him a contract because the spot it full. OK...how about the Angels? Red Sox? Dodgers? Mets? Cards? Put those teams in that spot. If either team of those and the O's offered the same exact contract...who would he choose to play with? By the way...Morales could be shifted to the DH or outfield for Pujols.
