"Two factors were considered in reaching this decision," said NHL senior vice president of hockey operations Mike Murphy. "The hit by Rome was clearly beyond what is acceptable in terms of how late it was delivered after Horton had released the puck and it caused a significant injury."
This was Rome's second game misconduct of the Stanley Cup playoffs, with the last one coming in the Western Conference Final series against the San Jose Sharks. It is the third game misconduct on Rome this season and the fourth of his career.

- sounds about right. You could compare this hit to a similar hit a Calgary guy gave a Wing in the regular season and got 6 games (forget their names, too lazy to look).
I would like to start seeing more severe suspensions, 10+games. You have to really make the player suffer for these types of plays and 10 games worth of salary is a nice hit to the wallet.

I find it funny how ppl in Vancity say Horton should have his head up on a play were he was defenseless and unaware a very late hit would come
And, yet, the Sedins are getting bullied by a goalie and the refs need to call Thomas for a legal hit because he was out of his crease
Weird bias
well Horton WAS "admiring his pass" when he got corked BUT that's NO excuse for a head hunting obviously "intent to injure" hit. as for the Thomas "check", it's perfectly legit IF the player has the puck which Henrik Sedin DID.

All people have talked about this year is headshots and concussions. In the Stanley Cup Finals, you had a scrub knock out a top player, NHL could not let him go unpunished.
It was late and caused a serious injury. I thought 2 games for sure because its Rome...who you ask? Exactly. Nobody cares knows or cares about him. If it was Bieksa or Chara, I would have been interested to see if they would have gotten suspended.
I think most of the damage was done because his head hit the ice. And even though Rome's shoulder hit Horton in the head, I don't think it was a headshot. A Torres play late in the game was an attempted head shot because he extended his elbow. Torres missed and nobody is talking about it. That's also part of the problem nowdays.
Back to Rome...on that type of play, there is nowehere else to hit him. He didn't raise the shoulder or elbow. Scott Stevens made a living off those hits. Horton was caught admiring his pass so some fault is on him but did Rome really have to make that hit? Puck was gone, player wasn't looking...can't criticize the suspension given these circumstances.
I agree with some other guys though...these elbow pads cant be so hard. Equipment needs to be looked at.

How can you not laugh at that give a certain incident earlier in the year? NHL should just say they have separate rules for star players...can you fault them for that? They are running a business.

Instead of the nucks coming out and saying the NHL did what they did hope Horton makes a full recovery the classless assholes come out and say he doesn't deserve 4 games and they feel bad for Rome that he can't play, what about Horton who can't play guy got knocked the fuck out on a cheap late hit

Raise your hand if you think the hit on Horton was the most dangerous hit in the playoffs. And then keep it raised if you think it was more dangerous/reckless than some "other" hits that didn't get a suspension during the season. 4 games in the middle of the Cup finals? What a joke.

beantown...there have been tons of classless actions by both teams and their fans all year...be honest with yourself

Before you go spouting perhaps you should look at the comments from the Bruins organization after the Pacioretty hit. They called it a "good hockey play". And Recchi called Pacioretty an"embellisher". Save your classless comments for someone else.

The NHL also said it was a good hockey play. Recchi was a complete asshole for saying what he did.

The NHL calling Chara's hit on Patches a good hockey play is the problem. It speaks volumes to their inconsistency and lack of a standard. If Rome's suspension is the standard they set from now on, cool. How the League handles the next infraction will be very telling. But Habs fans should feel robbed and rightfully so.
Mike Murphy himself said the reason for the suspension on Rome was because the hit was late and because of the resultant injury, stating that otherwise the hit was clean. Sound familiar to another hit?
Chara's and Rome's hits were both late, textbook interference (Chara's even more egregiously so because it was 3x later than Rome's hit) and yet one gets officially sanctioned by the NHL and the other gets the book thrown at him. Wheel of Justice strikes again.

And Jarko Ruuttu got suspended 2 games for biting enforcer Andrew Peters' hand during a fight while Alex Burrows gets away scott free for performing the same disgusting box act on Patrice Bergeron while not even in the act of fighting. Burrows who should have been suspended as has been widely echoed by NHL players around the league since game 1 then goes on to win game 2 for Vancouver in a game in which he should not have been playing.
Talk about a team being robbed. Allowing Burrows to play when he should not have been, certainly cost Boston game 2 and quite possibly and arguably the cup should they lose the finals.

And Savard bit Carcillo with no suspension. Bruin's got away with one too. What's your point?
