Growing up as a basketball player in Canada, you were always a second-class athlete compared to the hockey boys.
Every morning, you’d have to sit through every single NHL highlight just to get a taste of NBA action from the night before. Wanted new home uniforms? You’d have to wait until the hockey team got their third alternate jersey of the season first and then maybe…
And the music, well, that is another story all in itself. If you played basketball, you listened to hip hop. If puck was your game, you’d tune into whatever rock music got you jacked-up before the game.
My musical tastes have expanded with age, but I still throw on the hip-hop channel every so often to get it out of my system. Yesterday was one of those times. And to my surprise, it seems the lines have been blurred between hockey and hip hop.
Jim Jones’ track “We Got That (Gretzky)” is the first time I can remember hockey players being dropped in a rap song since Snoop was rocking the Penguins jersey in the “Gin & Juice” video.
The tune came out at the end of August and is making the rounds on popular hip-hop radio. The basic premise behind Jones’ song is that he’s making so much money, he needs a hockey bag to carry it all - hence the hook, Fu#k a duffle bag, ni@@a need a hockey bag.
The remix makes references Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and even legend Mark Messier.
However, it seems Jones is a big hockey fan. He spit this gem in “Bright Lights, Big City”: I think they mad we from the turf and we dangerous. And my whole team on ice, we play rough like the Rangers.
And how about Lil Wayne’s line from Busta Rhymes’ “Throw It Up”: I’m skating on blades like Sidney Crosby. You know you’ve made it when Weezy name-drops you, congrats Sid.
I also stumbled upon this masterpiece from screaming mad men, Onyx. The creators of classics like “Slam” and “Back Da Fu#k Up”, teamed with a young 50 Cent and laced them up for the video “React”.
Apparently, hip hop has been in love with hockey for a long time, we just weren’t listening. If you think about it, the Stanley Cup is the ultimate pimp goblet.

Can't let up, although the journey is rough Focus on the goal like it's the Stanley Cup I gotta play this thing for keeps My only stress relief is the hip-hop beats
