You notice that I said fulltime ? Well he wasn't the first person to wear the mask. That belongs to Clint Benedict, who wore a mask to protect his broken nose in 1936. He actually was quite the innovator wearing a mask and doing this odd thing of actually going down to his knees to make saves which was illegal at the time, but he had an unusal way to get around it.
He said he was praying. . Then the rule change was made where you could go to your knees after everyone saw that it was actually a great idea.
He won 4 Stanley Cups, so he was a top tier player of the time. And was elected to the hall of fame in 1965.
Also in the 1936 Winter Olympics, Teiji Honma wore a crude mask, that looked like a baseball catchers mask. The mask was made of leather, and had a wire cage that was a bit bigger, where Honma had large glasses.
Tonight on the NHL network at 7:00 PM ET, they are having a special on the goaltender mask.

Not only did Plante come up with wearing the mask full time but he did a couple of other things that were never done and isn't even given a 2nd thought today.

I believe Plante came out with his idea of the mask after Andy Bathgate purposely shot the puck at his face almost killing him. I think that's how the story went. I wasn't there at the time..barely

Gordie Howe had a clause in his contract stating that he couldn't fight. He was finally given the okay one night to not take any more shit from a "bully" in the league. He beat the bully to a bloody pulp. Wasn't the guy he beat up Andy Bathgate?

I'm not sure about that. But actually I think he played with Gordie on the Wings for a year or two. BTW, did you know that Andy's grandson was drafted by the Pens this year?

He was mostly known as a Ranger then after that he played hopscotch with a few teams. Leafs, Wings then back to the Western hockey league. Then caught a break durin the expansion years and was able to play a few more. He actually had a very long career.
His grandson is really nothing of note yet. He plays in the OHL for the Belleville Bulls
