Ring Magazine editor-in-chief Nigel Collins has predicted that Filipino ring icon Manny Pacquiao will win his rematch with WBC super featherweight champion Juan Manuel Marquez “convincingly.”
The respected Collins of Ring Magazine which is regarded as the “Bible” of boxing told Viva Sports/Manila Standard that he “gets the sense that the difference between Pacquiao and Marquez is that Manny is a great fighter while Juan Manuel is just a very good fighter.”
Collins said that greatness is “hard to quantify and you can never be sure when dealing with such subjective matters but a great fighter usually beats a very good one.”
The Ring Magazine editor praised both fighters as “highly skilled and will be in the best possible condition” for their rematch at the Mandalay Bay Resort Hotel & Casino on March 16 (Manila Time) in a fight card that will be telecast by Solar Sports in cooperation with GMA 7.
Collins revealed that Ring magazine’s managing editor Joe Santoloquito will be in Las Vegas on Friday “carrying a brand new Ring Magazine belt that will be presented to the winner inside the ring, immediately after the fight.”
Collins said that the 130 pound championship has been vacant since the magazine launched its new championship policy in 2002 and Ring has been “waiting for this fight in order to fill the vacancy.”
Pacquiao held the Ring’s featherweight belt after his demolition of Mexican legend Marco Antonio Barrera but relinquished it when he moved up in weight. Collins noted that should Marquez win it will be his first Ring belt. His brother Rafael briefly held the 122 pound championship belt but lost it to Israel Vasquez
