So tired of this comparison!!!! Both are great players but to compare them is too hard to do...played in different eras with so many different factors, different players, rules, competition etc... But lets see this brokedown:
Now to the judgement calls. This is where is gets hard to pick because of the eras, the level of competition and even the positions they each played.
Scoring: by the stats alone, MJ wins hands down. Jordan could score at will and arguably against tougher defenses. The likes of the Knicks and the Pistons come to mind. LBJ can score in bunches and from everywhere as MJ. Much stronger than MJ, he can use his strength to power in the lane. MJ was so athletic and agile and quick that he could out maneuver most any defender.
Defending: both worked so hard to become top defenders in the league. Jordan was not good at defending until the Zen master worked with him to be one of the best in the league. James also, not good when he came into the league but under Mike Brown has become one of the best.
Positions: James can play and does play almost all 5 spots on the floor. A real credit to a versatile player. Jordan played three positions but could not compare to James's playing all 5, if needed.
Eras: The NBA has changed and is constantly changing. Rules, younger players, TV, the NCAA has all effected the NBA. Jordan's era seems to have deeper competition than todays. The players were more fundamentally strong. Not necessarily stronger or faster, but better basketball players. The level of competition today seems watered down with young players that are not good shooters, passers, defenders. Also, the rules have changed. The "touch calls" of today would not have been called in Jordan's era. Deeper competition, better players and teams made it impressive for Michael to win scoring titles and rings as he did. Lebron's era of weaker players, not to his fault should not take away from his staure but one cannot compare the eras as MJ's was a lot tougher.
A couple of things to consider as well. James is not done. Barring any career ending injury, he has a lot of years left. Jordan has set the bar. James has all the tools to get match or better MJ's stats. If one wants to compare those alone at the end of LBJ's career, then please do. But there are too many different factors to compare them...Jordan was the best of his era and right now James is the best of his era. But who is better between the two..........lets leave it alone and remember MJ and watch LBJ as each are the best of their era!!!

Nice post! I enjoyed your breakdown. You were definitely wrong about one thing though. Jordan was great defender his entire career even before Phil Jackson was head coach. He actually won defensive player of the year in 87-88 before Phil Jackson was even head coach of the Bulls.

Guys Lebron is not, never has been, and never will be better than mj, his numbers are inflated by ridicoulous dunks and layups where he travels and charges. Over and over he has proven that he wilts under pressure. He is a flopper and always passes the ball at the ne ti deflect failure on to others. Never before seen size and speed combo? Yes....thats where it ends.

Jordan all day. But yes they play two different positions and have two different games, so really shouldnt even compare them. But Jordan is just so much better still IMO. Could start with intangibles, the drive, the tenacity, the relentlessness he has over Bron. Jordan routinely beat his man off the dribble, I rarely see Bron beat his man off the dribble, he just doesnt do that, but he's a big guy so I dont fault him for that. Only thing Bron really does better from a basketball standpoint is pass IMO and that comes from his approach and mindset to basketball, he's the consumate team player, its his personality, he wants people to like him, he wants his teammates to be happy so he's one of the better passers in the league. Jordan didnt care about what people thought, he had an insane drive to win and for years he only trusted in himself to get such done.

I dont use numbers as a main source in this comparison, numbers dont tell the whole story, rings dont tell the whole story unless you were the main reason for those rings.

Lebron is not one of the best defender. He is average 1 on 1. He has trouble with long athletic guys that can dribble. He got burned by Green vs Celtics and Notice how george blows by him.
Lbj is a good roamer, help defender. But put him one on one he is overrated.
Jordan one of the best defenders.

Jtoler,
I think you are right on the money with this analysis. I don't think anyone will ever match Mj's drive. Lebron is a great player he just isn't Mike. Completely different player. He doesn't just take games over like Mj did. At least not as consistently

Anyone gets physical with him now he cries to the refs asks for technicals to be given.... They lose the win streak he says Bulls were too physical LMFAO
In the 80s and 90s you could be physical on defense because of hand checking and as well as if your going hard to the rim expect to get motha darn'd on the way there.
If Jordan played in todays game he'd be at the line alot. Not to mention he could shut people out offensively because of his defense.

HOW IS PUTTING LEBRON IN THE 80S AND 90S OVER?

First off....lebron has better basketball stats.... The awards and stuff will come. Google the top 2 guards and small forwards of the 90,s.....Jordan had mark price, Mitch Richmond and a bunch of athletic shrubs guarding him.....you know who was 2 of the top 3 small forwards were in the 90's according to nba.com....schrimp and mulling...let me know how that would have went...all the physical players had retired by the time Jordan won anything in a weak nba b/C all the stud players had already retired. its funny how you say lebron gets all his points with layups and dunks. ....how quickly we all forget how poor a shooter mj was when he first entered league

I'm not even gonna get into the debate but when Lebron gets the rings he will be considered better.
Scottie Pippen, Alonzo Mourning and other greats have already came out and said Lebron is better than him. I guess they don't know basketball and were born in the 90's as well.
Did you ever consider Scottie and Zo may be a little jealous of MJ? Something to think about. You ever think Zo may be trying to motivate Lebron he does work for the Heat.

How does lebron have better basketball stats? Explain. This post may be the silliest and most off base post I have ever seen ha. The NBA doesn't even allow you to hand check anymore. MJ definitely played in an era of better defenders and defense. Kids these days.

He only averages more points....he shot more times every game. Everything else is equal or better for lebron......Jordan shot just below 50 and lebron just above 49%. lebron has literally improved shooting % every year of career. He shot 41% his rookie year and 57% this season......57% he is not a center. 57%. He is still learning the game.....i think people conveniently forget that mj and lebron were the same age when they won their first title. lebron is a more gifted b ball player. Period. The other stuff like drive and intangibles etc. I have no argument. But at the end of the day if lebron wins 4 or 5 rings it will be easily debatable for lebron? And name ne any one physical skill other than free throws that mj is better than bron at? Im still waiting!! Understand and appreciate this fact. The best of the best in each generation always get better. Its fact. End of story. Science and ped's both legal and illegal allow the players to get mire out if their bodies than ever before. Whether that makes it fair or not is a whole other convo and we really don't know who took what through the years. Think about AP or Calvin Johnson playing in the 70's or 80's.

Lol all these lebron nut huggers. Keep watching espn and drunk the cool aid.
MJ all day. Better defender, better shooter, mr clutch.
All LBJ had on him is playmaking and size and speed. LBJ CANNOT break anybody down on the dribble. He just Bulldoze his way to the basket and gets the calls. He IS NOT a better shooter. ANd HE WILL never be a Defensive player of the year No matter wat the clowns from ESPN say.
Fuggin Reggie Miller was slobering on Superman cok calling him the game's greatest closerbefor he choked and turned it over twice

Jordans defense blows lebrons out of water. Look at jordans steals and blocks. Way more than lebron. And stop saying he guards 1 thru 5. Name one center he could guard. Or one good power forward he could guard. This is the dumbest discussion ever. Its really not even close. Lebron prob has the two worst performances ever by a superstar in nba finals and not to mention he is 1-2 in the finals. Look at mjs stats in finals and oh yea he went 6-0 and woulda been 8-0 if he hadnt retired

People overrate lebron as a defender because of the highlight blocks. Whenever he blocks someone its on espn so everyone assumes hes better than he is. And jordan had to deal with many centers patrolling paint. In todays game there hardly is no centers so lebron can get to Rim easily. It would be alot tougher for lebron if he had to deal with ewing. Robinson. Shaq mourning. Olajuwon etc etc

ok so by your own statement you said MJ has a better shooting percentage. So how exactly is lebron the better shooter? Majority of his shots are dunks and layups and his shooting percentage is still below MJ's. If you dont count Mikes wizards years when he was 40 years old he is above 50% for career. Lebron is not a better shooter. MJ's post and mid famge jumpshot are light years ahead of Lebron. Dont be silly. His steals and blocks too. Not to mention his record in the finals. Lebron can never match 6-0 6 finals MVPS.

Another great point in Jordans day there was no defensive 3 second nonsense so centers could camp out waiting for MJ. These girl rules today make it easy for guys today to bulldoze to the basket.
