Amare has 3.5 years and 70+ million left on his contract, with uninsurable knees and the worst numbers (thus far) in his entire career. the knicks couldn't trade him for a bag of balls right now. Melo isn't being dealt either, not a year after all the trouble getting him from denver and not when you consider he's the best one on one scorer in a league that depends on one v one play in the playoffs at times, you'll never get fair value back for him.
the knicks clearly appear to have bottomed out about two weeks ago, things are looking up. not that they're a legit contender now, but I think time will tell what they are.
Lin is clearly a solid pg, the 25 point 9 assist nights won't go on forever but he can see the floor, dissect the defense consistently on a pick and roll, and plays defense as well as a player of his athletic build can. the knicks with amare and melo haven't had a fair shot yet, when they get back and have time to gel with a real team before the playoffs start is when we'll know what the ceiling actually is.
A starting 5 of Lin (yes, he's going to be the starter regardless of Baron's situation)/Fields/Melo/Amare/Tyson is solid. Right there you have a facilitating pg who can drive when need be, a guy who creates his own shot as well as anybody in the league at the 3, the league's biggest pick and roll nightmare at the 4, another good pick and roll player/2nd best rim protector in the nba at the 5. off the bench you'd have davis (hopefully) who would have tempered expectations and time to get his form back just giving the knicks 15 mins a night, shumpert who is a ferocious defender at sg position but has been playing out of position all year until lin arrived, a glue guy in jeffries who can give u a few minutes and play sound defenses/take a charge or two, amare playing at the 5 to start second quarters, another glue guy in harrelson, and the stretch 4/knockdown shooter in novak. i'm not saying they're going to be elite but i definitely definitely think they have a shot at figuring something worthwhile out when melo and amare get back.
