The dunk is the most destructive way to score in any sport. It can instantly light a fire under the team, demoralize your opponent and gets the crowd on its feet.
Most jams you can see coming and have a moment to hold your breath, raise your eyebrows and pucker your ass in anticipation. But the slam out of nowhere is almost like serving a sudden shot of ice-cold electric tequila to everyone in the gym.
Some NBA players have perfected the feat of the “Shocking Slam”, casually strolling through the paint, taking off and just when you think they’re settling for the layup – SMASH!
Here are the best deceptive dunkers in the NBA:
Manu Ginobili, San Antonio Spurs
Even though Manu is getting up in age, the Argentine can still flush it if you give him an inch. Ginobili’s quick first step and slithering slashes weave through crowded keys, looking like he’s about to fall on his head before stuffing it home.
Dwyane Wade, Miami Heat
On the breakaway, Wade can put on a show worthy of a Sprite endorsement. But it is when he seeps through the cracks and finishes with the thunder out of nowhere that he’s at his best. D-Wade, at a generous 6-foot-4, makes it looks effortless at times despite the three guys swinging from his shorts.
Baron Davis, Los Angeles Clippers
When he’s not in Vinny Del Negro’s dog house or nursing one of his 11 injuries, BD can get up in a hurry. No one will confuse him for teammate Blake Griffin, but Davis is a sneaky dunker who will crown your ass if you lose him for a split second.
Eric Gordon, Los Angeles Clippers
The man who is stealing Davis’ job in La-La Land has already packed his highlight reel full of impressive dunks this season. His slams against the Spurs earlier this year are already climbing the youtube charts with nearly 20,000 views.
Russell Westbrook, Oklahoma City Thunder
Westbrook isn’t as a deceptive leaper as the others mentioned above, but his jams are just as shocking. The OKC guard put the cashews on the Houston Rockets this past Sunday, hammering it over a lane packed with defenders.
Rajon Rondo, Boston Celtics
This guy can’t catch a break. He’s one of the best point guards in the league, has a ring and two Finals appearances, is a triple-double threat every game and still can’t get any love outside of Beantown. We show R.R. some dap, especially after he burned the Heat with this dunk out of left field.
Monta Ellis, Golden State Warriors
Known more for his spin move than his vertical, Ellis doesn’t dunk that often. But when he does, one of the NBA’s purest scorers, can bring them to their feet. And now that Stephen Curry is transitioning to point guard, there will be a lot more space from him to pull off plays like this.
Any other deceptive dunkers need mentioning on this list?

Not that I totally disagree with this statement, but I think it all depends on the situation. A dunk that was good for a poster shot off the opening tip, does not have the same effect as it will in the 4th qtr. to take a lead in game 7 of the finals.....
I would also put a pick 6 in FB, grand slam to tie or take the lead in BB, penalty shot in NHL and so on.......but good thread, interested on other thoughts by everyone...
