What's up fellas, another TNT Thursday. Looking forward to the Celtics@Heat game the most tonight. May decide to add a play on the Warriors@Bulls game once the spread comes out but most likely will just stick to one play. 2 new team previews, hope you guys enjoy. Best of luck gents. Peace - - - MAK
DENVER NUGGETS - - - The 2010/2011 Denver Nuggets are plagued with the same disease of spreading envy as other teams in the NBA. The coalition of the 3 youngsters in Miami has influenced a lot of players. I really think the NBA is quite envious of the decision Bosh, Wade and Lebron made. A decision that was years in the making. Their contracts were aligned for this opportunity...unfortunately for superstar Carmelo Anthony, he is held hostage for another year. Mello does not want to wait, he wants out now. It puts the organization in a very difficult position because his value is diminished due to their need to trade him. Denver has already seen the devastation Bosh and Lebron made to their respective ball clubs when they ended up getting nothing but high draft picks in return. Denver will not want to do the same thing. Mello does not want to stay in Denver after the year is done, he just won’t. No matter what his relationship with Karl and the mutual respect he has for him and his teammates. He wants out of Colorado. I just do not see Mello being in a Denver Nuggets uniform all season long, it just wouldn't make any business sense whatsoever. With Mello this team is still a playoff team in the west. Without him, depending on who they get in return, they could be in a bit of trouble. The best players offered right now are Danillo Galinari or Derrick Favours. Replacing the best pure scorer in the NBA is not even possible so no matter what trade Denver makes, they will lose out in immediate return. Their off season additions were solid in my opinion. Al Harrington is a huge pickup, he could be one of the more underrated moves of the off-season. A proven scorer who will fit perfectly in the Denver system. If he starts that would be a potent starting 5 with Mello but I suspect he may come off the bench as they do need some type of offense off the pine. Shelden Williams was a good pickup, a big man who got some time with injury riddled Boston at the end of the regular season, he can still grind and battle for boards and should be a good replacement for Kenyon until he returns. Melvin Ely is a no name but he looks a lot trimmer then he used to and did do well in the preseason for Denver. Forbes is their undrafted rookie who opened some eyes, he has the size and the shot to stay in this league. Ty Lawson is another year older and is a solid point guard in the NBA. Chris Andersen when healthy is a premier post presence on the defensive end. Nene continues to be a solid pro but Denver will not go anywhere unless he takes his game to another level. J.R Smith may shine if Mello departs from Denver, he has massive talent but does not have the level head to keep his game consistent. I still consider Billups to be one of the best point guards in the league. Yes he is growing much older and will not put up the same stats as he used to, however I still think he is one of the best decision makers in the league and a legit leader on the court, he will continue to be a solid NBA pro for quite a few more years. The only think is, if Mello goes and Denver decides to restart, Billups could be a great addition to a playoff team and thus an amazing bargaining chip. Finally I save the best for last, I am very huge on this player. My breakout player of the year especially if Mello departs is Aaron Afflalo. Afflalo has improved production every year he has been in the league. Last year he played all 82 for the Nugs and was a vital part to Denver’s late season success. Afflalo is an underrated shooter, he can stroke it from long range and has an exceptional mid-range game as well. As a defender he is very undervalued, he guards the best 2 guards in the league on a nightly basis, it isn’t Mello who guards the opposing teams best player, it’s Aaron. With Mello I think Afflalo can average about 16 pts a game, without Mello depending on who they get in return, Aaron could turn into the number one scorer on the team. So they have Karl, one of the best leaders at the point position and the best pure scorer in the NBA, an array of bigs. In my humble opinion Mello is as close as he can get to a winning team. If he goes to NYC or NJ it won’t be better at all, if he really cares about only winning, then stay in Denver, sign for less and add 2 pieces to an already solid core roster.....but wifey wants the big city lights, not Denver. Can you say whipped? Without the Mello Man, Denver is just another team.
2010/2011 DENVER NUGGETS - - - No point in even making a prediction here. No idea what happens but from a business standpoint I just do not see Mello in baby blue for the entire season. Denver may still battle their way into the playoffs. Unless they really pull out a very good trade for themselves, the future of the Denver Nuggets looks bleak.

LOS ANGELES LAKERS - - - Rudy
Tomjanovich stated after Hakeem and the Rockets double-clutched back to
back championships; “Never under-estimate the heart of a champion” Mak
does. I underestimate the drive and hunger for another. Most
importantly I underestimate this roster against the 2010/2011 Boston
Celtics in a 7 game series. I think there is absolutely no way in hell
the Lakers win another 7 game series vs Boston and therefore I doubt
they three-peat considering I will bank on Boston’s success in the
post-season. The Lakers actually did get better...which is very scary.
The added Matt Barnes, Steve Blake and Theo Ratliff. Losing Farmer,
Mbenga and Morrison. Barnes is a perfect fit off the bench but I do
think Blake was the wrong choice at PG. I was thinking they would go
for more along the lines of a playmaking free-agent PG like Luke Ridnour
but they opted for an outside threat. Jerry West knows best I guess.
The most important addition in my opinion is an internal addition.
Luke Walton is healthy and he is the playmaker they missed off the bench
last season. He will have more of an impact then the free agent
acquisitions in my opinion. The biggest strength of the Lakers were
their size and length over an under-powered and under-sized Boston
roster. I just really do not see Gasol, Bynum and Old Man Ratliff being
able to contest with the most dominating front line in the history of
the NBA. Shaq, Jermaine, Big Baby, Garnett and Perk will eat the Lakers
for lunch. Despite all of that, I think the Lakers have the most
experience, poise, determination, confidence & cohesion in the NBA.
They also have the most dominating, obnoxious, intelligent athlete in
sports today. Not to mention the best power forward in the game today.
This Lakers team will continue to reign at the top of their
Conference. But they will not win another championship.
2010/2011 LOS ANGELES LAKERS - - -
The Lakers will quite easily win the conference once again. Despite
all you OKC and POR lovers, there are no teams in the Western bracket
that are really molded to dethrone the champs. They are the best team
in the conference and in a 7 game series I don’t really see any team
that can take them to the brink. Los Angeles will once again make the
NBA Finals where they will lose to the Boston Celtics. Phil Jackson
will retire after the year. Pau Gasol will be in consideration for the
MVP award.

PICK: LAKERS – 2.5 (-107) - - - 2 UNITS

I suspect many of you will assume this is a square play, but you may be
surprised I think a lot of people will back Denver here. Denver always
manages to play well against Los Angeles and coming off their most
embarrassing loss in years a lot of the public suspect the Nuggets to
come out with a vengeance on TNT. The only think I am banking on is the
fact that Los Angeles realizes that as well and mentally prepares
themselves for a battle tonight. Lakers are under some scrutiny as well
for 2 very “ugly” wins at home vs Toronto and Minnesota. I watched
both games in their entirety and I have to honestly say I thought
Toronto and Minnesota really brought it hard to the champs. Toronto was
running the break to perfection and hitting a lot of shots, they
deserved to keep that game close and did just that. Minnesota changed
up their rotation and finally decided to play Love the minutes he
deserved. He responded with a monster game and dominated the champs on
the boards. The Lakers committed a lot of turnover that game and were
sloppy at times. The champs were not delighted with their performance.
Ron Artest even stated that the game vs Denver is a must win because of
their effort or lack thereof vs Minnesota. Los Angeles is undefeated
this season for a reason, their starting 5 is playing their best
basketball and the Lakers bench is leaps and bounds better then it was
last year. Los Angeles justg matches up against Denver. Fisher who
will be starting his 299th consecutive game in a row is a great defender
at the 1 and will limit mr big shot tonight. Kobe and Afflalo always
battle and Aaron does play Kobe quite well, the snake charmer seems to
get angry when matched up against Afflalo in the past. Anger
accelerates Kobe’s game, it doesn’t frustrate him. Ron Artest is
playing the best defence of his career. Yes bold statement but I don’t
remember ever seeing Ron this focused on stopping an opponent. He
already has 16 steals on the season and absolute thief thus far. He
limited Brandon Roy to a season low 8 points on 1-6 shooting recently
and completely had the all-star locked down. Tonight I think he could
be key against the Denver wings Mello, J.R and Afflalo. Lamar Odom is
stepping up this season, this guy has limitless talent and is always
taking a back-seat to Pau and Kobe but is just as talented in his own
way. An al-star in my opinion and tonight Selden Williams will not be
able to contain Odom who is currently 9th in the league in rebounds
grabbing about 11 a game. Pau and Nene always battle down low but it is
always Gasol who seems to get the better of the man formerly known as
Hilario. The starters just dominate in my opinion matchup wise. Off
the bench it used to be Denver that held the punch over the Lakers, J.R,
Harrington, Lawson are a solid trio off the bench but Barnes, Walton,
Blake, Brown and Ratliff will out-produce the Denver bench tonight.
Lakers are stronger then Denver and in my opinion better prepared for
this matchup. The Lakers have had a long home stand and been in
California all season long except for their trip to Phoenix. They have
practiced consistently and have had ample time to prepare for this
western conference showdown. Denver on the other hand is coming off 6
day road trip and got back to Denver just yesterday. That skipped
practice to allow for rest but after a 31 point loss I am not too sure
that was a good idea. Denver has not been great on 1 days rest recently
and even worst on 1 days rest at home after a long road trip. Lakers
are the better team we all know that, but what type of mentality will
Denver show up with after that embarrassment in Indiana? Tonight we
find out the real mental fortitude of the Denver Nuggets. 3 UNITS KOBE “RAPE ARTIST” BRYANT - - -

Great points as always mak but you lost me on fisher being a good defender at the 1. Guy gets burned everytime by good pg's. He might be able to defend Chauncey but not the quicker ones.
Love the Lakers pick. BOL.

#1 I never thought I would hear the name Luke Walton and playmaker in the same sentence unless there was a "is not" involved...
#2 Jermaine O'neal is nothing to brag about...
#3 Steve Blake is a very good fit for the Lakers imo
#4 How could you question the undefeated defending champs' heart while backing a Boston team that lost to the Cavs w/o Mo Williams? (The same team the Nets just bashed last night...) ??? Lakers are fine, they might not blow every team out by 20 but they have a better shot at 72 wins then any other team in the league because they are so well put together.

Hey mak -- not being nit-picky or anything, but its "Arron" Afflalo, not "Aaron" Afflalo. He spells it weird for some reason. I only know because he was one of my favorite UCLA players of all time, really resurrected the Bruins program with Jordan Farmar and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute.
But you nailed it on the head, if Melo gets shipped out I think he becomes a very valuable fantasy player. He's a fantastic defender but, more importantly, he's a leader, period. Very positive attitude, always respects the opponent, not afraid of taking the big shot... just the exact type of guy I'd want to root for, really.

As for now - all source report Anthony is staying put (but we all know that could change by February). As much as everyone wants him in Colorado to stay, it isn't going to happen. The real question is will he be traded mid-season of after the season is over. Nuggets would love to get something for him now before it's too late but the lack of realistic trade offers will probably keep him off the table under next summer.
The main thing plaguing Denver right now is a lack of presence in the paint - without Nene, Anderson, or Martin 100% - it makes every game a challenge, especially on the boards. Now, it comes down to guard play. You see a lot of Lawson, Billups, Affalo, Anthony, and Al Harrington to speed up the floor now since their size is limited. This type of fast break lineup has been the one that has been the most productive so far. Marvin Ely and Shelden Williams will usually get the start, but won't serve any major minutes right now because of inconsistent play.

Because if you knew anything about basketball, you would know a loss to the Cavs three weeks into the season doesn't mean a damn thing. Do you really think Cleveland is gonna beat Boston in the playoffs? And since Boston lost to Cleveland, and the Nets "bashed" them, I guess that means NJ is better than Boston too?
I'm pretty damn sure come finals time, the C's will be there.

When I mean staying put - I mean staying put for the rest of the season.
Please nobody take my words out of context and come to believe I think he will finish his career in Denver... because that is just ridiculous. I know how bad some of these mid-day covers posters can be with misinterpreting statements.
