This series actually reminds
me a lot of the 2004 Western Conference finals when a young Kevin Garnett and
his Minnesota Timberwolves were defeated by the L.A. Lakers in six games.
That year the T-Wolves finally got out of the first round after years of
disappointing early exits, as the addition of a few veteran guards (Cassell and
Sprewell) helped put a young team over the top. Sound familiar?
To beat the Lakers at home
you have to play absolutely perfect, focused basketball for 48 minutes. There is no room for letdowns, lapses in
concentration or temper tantrums. Even
if you let your guard down for two or three minutes, the Lakers will start
spurting and go on an 8-0 run. If you
play bad for a full quarter, you’re probably not winning the game. The reason Houston was able to steal Game 1
at Staples last series is because they’re such an organized, disciplined team
that is capable of sustaining a high level of play (on the road) over the
course of an entire game. Are the
Nuggets capable of doing likewise? I
don’t believe so. I just don’t think
they can play great for four straight quarters on the road without a few
lapses. Will they have flashes of
brilliance? Most certainly, but
maintaining that is another story.
