We grilled Keith Kizer on the Covers Radio Show today (Tuesday) -- check it out here
Hey Teddy,
Thanks for the post. I listened in and found it interesting. I know MMA judging is not always easy, and it is not just at shows in Vegas where there has been controversy over judging. There has been some very questionable judging at UFC events held in other states and in the UK as well. The Melvin Guillard - Gleison Tibeau fight in 2009 was one of the worst cases I have ever seen. Just last night in the Rick Story - Jesse Lennox fight, two judges scored it 30-27 for Story, and the third scored it 29-28 for Lennox. How can one judge see it so completly different from the other two? Keith's comment that the judges are sitting at different vantage points around the octagon and might not have the same view. Do these judges not have monitors to look at when the action is taking place at the far side of the ring?
Bottom line: It does not appear that judges are held accountable for their actions. I know Keith mentioned that he will sometimes sit and talk with the judges after the fights to get further explanation as to why they scored the fights the way they did. I have rarely seen this information posted publicly. Perhaps to improve accountability, judges scoring should be forced to publicly publish the rationale of their scoring decision.
