As a doc, I try to help you guys out on the major injuries as we come into the big games. I have been mostly right and occasionally wrong. Here are some thoughts on the the big TE injury. We have a really good idea of how Gronk will do with looking at Big Ben. This is the same injury. Remember how Big Ben also went back into the game. Then remember how he played the following week but had to take the second game off, when the pain was too great? I have watched the tape of the injury and the mechanism does not appear to have been as severe as Big Ben's. Yes, he gets rolled up on but the ankle is not really tweaked that much....some thoughts. 1) Belichick will give us no info, Gronk is questionable as is the rest of the Pats every week. He is the only coach who can and does get away with this shit but that is another column. 2) The injury did not appear that bad and he returned both positives. 3) There are some reports he will need surgery after the game, this is a big negative. It means that the membrane is not just stretched but also torn. This puts him on its own, as a grade II or worse. 4) He is not a QB, this means that he actually has to run and engage blockers, this will be harder than Big Ben just delivering the rock. 5) He has had two full weeks of rest to heal, this is a big positive.
So here is my guess and this is only a guess....this is not based on personal knowledge of Gronkowski. I think there is little doubt he suits up and plays. Most seem to agree on this. That said, he will be limited, at least some. I base this on the line that he needs surgery after the game. This makes this injury again at least a grade II. There is no way he heals a full grade II tear in two weeks, no way. Not even with PRP. This is a fucking horrible painful injury which they can cover up and also a unstable injury which they cannot cover. In that this membrane shares responsibilities in holding everything together, I think that he will not have the 100% confidence he should. You get Rob at 75% or so and IF he takes a hit to the ankle it could end his game. That is my best guess. 75%, you can see the effects on cuts and blocking but not so much with vertical running. I am going to bet against him in the props but small, looking more on yardage than catches, with the idea being he will not be able to YAC and go deep as easy. I see him as a decoy and look for large games from Hernandez and maybe Branch. I may even look at 85 some here, as crazy as it seems. This little prop voice keeps yelling at me Branch, Branch, and Branch. He has been there before and that year he also had not had all that big of a regular season... Also, looking to Edelman? Hope it helps, GL Crash

good info... nice coming from physician who can make an educated assessment. Big guy like that seems to make his living running straight routes , then going up high. I assume his jumping ability will still be good. Looks like the biggest issue will be that he is more vunerable to re-injury.
i'll probably be on the giants anyway, -- gotta figure gronkowski will be effective whatever they do- Pats certainly have the offensive packages. as always, evrything depends on how well Giants continue to play defense.

I was thinking that Ballard was going to have a super big game but the more I think about this the more I think Bellichick will look to play zone and give up the yardage and not the score. That seems to be the way they have played all year. Let the opposing team advance the ball and then flood the end zone and go for the pick. I may actually play the NYG WR's Cruz and Nicks and stay away from the TE. We got to Vegas for this and put $5-$50 bucks on 50 props or so. Mine will be WR heavy. I am not sold on Welker, one things is for sure, he must be taken away or Brady and him will kill ya. We usually about break even but it makes the game so interesting. Just some thoughts.

Thanks for the info Crash...your injury analysis and estimations have usually been dead-on.
I see the G-men puttin some licks on him rendering him probably a no show or little show 2nd half.
Lots of dinks n dunks to adavnce here using woodhead, hernandes, edelman, the vertical game is virtually non existent here.
This by the way I totally agree with. If you look at the last two times these teams have played this has been the modus operandi for the Patriots. Brady with a whole bunch of attempts but limited yards. Maybe the Pats try to go over the top but I see more of the same with them taking away the deep stuff and making them move the ball the whole field. Both ways. Lean to the Under on this by the way.

And shoot lets be honest, the guy is 6 foot 6 and strong as an ox, he is a game changer, you going to go low after the ankle or up high? Hard to hit the thing but sure, they give it a try.

I look for Belichick to milk this thing to the very end. I think it works in his favor both ways. If he plays, big emotional lift for the Pats If he cannot for some reason, maybe the Giants get a little over confident.

Good stuff here's another article from an expert link
There is no way that guy's gonna be 100%. Supposedly a 4-5 week problem, not a 2-week problem.
Good link but I will put it out there we do know he has a grade II or even a grade III as he will need surgery. I really doubt they would plan surgery on a grade I. I really think he has a II also, if he had a full III, I think they would rule him out right now. That said, he could have a III and this could all be gamesmanship. I am sticking with a II....

Wow- great video! Shit he looks really good don't he? He is also bigger than a fucking house! I read from a couple different reports he needs surgery, they may all be rumor based but it is definitely on the web. As stated, with the Pats you never know. Grade I sprain is strained but not torn Grade II is torn but not completely, there are remaining fibers Grade III complete tear.
You can see from these that the majority of injuries fall into the grade II. To me, there are minor II and major II if you get my drift. He would have a major II. He looks good. He plays for sure. He plays at a high level for sure. I am unsure if he is 100% but he has to be close. This looks so promising. One caveat, out of the boot, he may be a little sloppy with his stability. This ligament kind of holds everything together. That they remove the boot, he has to have some stability though. He plays, he plays at a high level. He may even get one practice in? Good luck boys. I wonder if the line does not go back to three with this info? I am serious about this.

people keep talkin about to injury and how well he played in superbowl vs pats in 05. He sat his injury out from week 16 so he had at least a month to recover.
Gronk will be about 75-80% tops. On Gmen and I will take that any day

Hey no relaxing when it's the last of the year...you can relax AFTER the game
IMO he's 75%. I have had lower ankle sprains all the time-and granted that is not upper sprains. I'm sure Crashdavis knows that if you get back on your ankle right away, you're more likely to be alright.
If he doesn't practice all week, or pracitces just once, his ankle is going to inflame bigtime. We gotta keep an eye on this
I wish I could state my pick fellas I just gotta get the tix in first......

As for assuming he's 100%, sure Coughlin can plan for it.
But if he's not doing well it makes the job a whole lot easier for the Giants. As everyone is talking about, there is no backup, he's a huge part of their offense. Stats wise he's their 2nd leading receiver link and they do NOT have his backup as I said
So we have GOT to keep an eye on this.....
