According to the NFL rule book a play ends when the player controlling the ball is tackled/down by contact OR steps out of bounds. No tackle is credited for a player stepping out of bounds as this signifies that the play is dead.

Case in point would be tonight's box score. Minnesota ran 61 offensive plays two of which were lost fumbles and three of which were interceptions. They also intercepted the ball once. That would leave 57 plays that ended in their possesion. As you can see by the box score only 50 tackles were credited, leaving 7 plays that ended by the player possessing the ball stepping out of bounds.

I would have to agree w/ Billysink, but you asked a ? that I'm not certain of...I know on IN-Field plays it's the nearest defender, but OOB no clue. That sucks if you lose a bet/fantasy game because your defender had a straight line on a guy and the bitch ran OOB.

What about the 10 (13 but 3 were INTs) incomplete passes? On those plays, no one is getting tackled, ruled down by contact, nor ran out of bounds. Incomplete passes, the plays are ruled dead.

Follow me here. You then add those 10 incomplete passes to the 50 tackles and that gives you 60 total plays. Then factor in the MIN INT of Cutler and that gets 61, the total number of plays MIN ran tonight.

All of which means there either was no running out of bounds at all, (which I find hard to be true,) or that someone is being credited with tackles on those out of bound plays.

Making any sense here?

kickin don&#x27;t forget to factor in the special teams tackles which are included in the tackle total. That is 6 tackles that do not factor in to the 61 offensive plays from scrimmage.  That still leaves 6 or 7 offensive plays unaccounted for. Take off the two that ended in scores and you wind up with 5 or 6 that ended with a player running out of bounds. To which no tackle is credited.
