Week 2 @ Minnesota: The Colts pulled out a narrow last minute 18-15 win on a Vinateri FG. They would have lost against any other decent QB as Tavaris Jackson was awful in this game (he was benched after it) and crawled into a hole in the red zone. 5 red zone trips resulted in 5 FG's, just 1 TD in those 5 trips probably would have been a Minny win.
Week 5 @ Houston: The Colts were being soundly beaten 27-17 with 4 minutes left when Sage Rosenfels, the backup QB for Houston decided to cough the ball up 4 times in the next 5 minutes resulting in 2 Colt touchdowns and the game clinching play to run out the clock. The Colts were extremely fortunate to win this game, they should have lost.
Week 7 @ Green Bay: The Colts were beaten up losing by 20, 34-14, to a team with a quarterback who could effectively move the ball and didn't cough it up like the Colts had seen in their first two road games.
Week 8 @ Tennessee: Colts lose 31-21. Yet again the Colts don't play well on the road and lose to a good team with a good QB who does not commit a turnover.
Week 10 @ Pittsburgh: Good road win. But still they were very fortunate. Pittsburgh still had a chance to win on the last play despite commiting 3 turnovers to none for the Colts. Also, earlier in the game the Colts managed a long TD pass that was tipped and should have been intercepted by the corner but instead fell into the lap of the reciever for a Colts touchdown. Very lucky break.
Week 12 @ San Diego: Again, the Colts recieved some good fortune. On a key drive in the 4th quarter, on two different occasions the Chargers stopped the Colts on 3rd down but in both instances, awful pass interference calls were made against the Chargers that even Micheals and Madden thought were phantom calls. What should have been a Colts punt resulted in them getting a key FG. The Colts won 23-20.
Week 13 @ Cleveland: Colts did not play well here at all. They should have beaten up an awful Cleveland team but still needed a defensive touchdown to sneak away with a 10-6 win.
Week 16 @ Jacksonville: After Jacksonville beat Indy in Indy earlier this year, you'd think the Colts would have come out with revenge on their mind and soundly beaten a Jacksonville team that in previous weeks had evidentl quit. However the game was close all game and the deciding score in the 31-24 win came on an interception return late in the 4th quarter. Despite that Jacksonville took the ball and drove all the way down the field only to lose on a sack inside the Colts 10, which was very unfortunate because the play before that a Jags player was injured resulting in a critical 10 second runoff.
Yes, they went 6-2 on the road, but they got a hell of a lot of breaks and should have lost the Minny and Houston games if those teams had a semi-adequate QB, and who knows what would have happened in the San Diego game if not for those awful, awful pass interference calls.
And what about the old saying that you have to run the ball and stop the run in the playoffs? Well here are the Colts rushing totals on the road this season game by game:
19 carries, 25 yards
22 carries, 79 yards
23 carries, 73 yards
22 carries, 94 yards
19 carries, 62 yards
23 carries, 91 yards
29 carries, 90 yards
18 carries, 32 yards
How about opponents running on the Colts in those road games?:
36 carries, 179 yards
32 carries, 156 yards
35 carries, 116 yards
31 carries, 88 yards
27 carries, 59 yards
25 carries, 120 yards
32 carries, 101 yards
27 carries, 105 yards
Hey, accuse me of nit picking all you want but the fact is the Colts have not been impressive on the road at all this season and were on the receiving end of some great fortune. My point is, I see all these people putting the Colts in the Superbowl. Sure it's possible but can this Colts team really go on the road and win 3 road playoff games? Can they even win 1? Sometimes things are not always as they appear.
Just saying..........................
