Bartman cost the Cubs an out no doubt about it. The error by Gonzalez was the real killer. Oh yeah, the Cubs could have won game 7 too....they didn't....one of the greatest collapses in a 7 games series of all time !

  I am a die hard Cubs fan and always have been. Bartman cost the Cubs exactly one out because the ball was going right in Alou's glove.
  However, the Cubs did not lose the game or series because of Bartman. The players lost the game and eventually the series. Prior didn't get the out, Gonzalez didn't stop the ball cleanly, Wood got hit hard in game seven, etc..
  Fans that put the blame on Bartman are just looking for a scapegoat. Yes, you would think Bartman would have thought better of the situation than to reach for a possible out, but he didn't have much time to think about it.
  Lastly, the Cubs winning the World Series or even making the playoffs are a long ways away. They will be bad and out of contention for awhile. However, if the Cubs ever get the chance to raise the World Series trophy, Steve Bartman deserves the first chance to hoist it in the air.

Bartman stood up in his seat to catch the foul ball. He did not reach over the wall or onto the field of play to get the ball. As a matter of fact it was Alou that was jumping up against the wall to try and catch the ball. Also, Alou sucked, he would have never caught that ball.

  Alou did the suck in the field, no argument there. But there is no question he would have the caught the ball. Your smoking some good stuff if you think otherwise. But fans blaming Bartman is insane as I said..

alou already said there was NO WAY he was catching that ball if you look at it in slow motion the ball was going behind alou

   Alou said he wouldn't have caught the ball because he wanted to take some heat off of Bartman, and rightfully so. The ball was going right in Alou's glove, anyone could see that..It would have been a sure fire out.
   But as I said, the Cubs did not lose because of Bartman. The Cubs lost because of the players, which is the reason any team in any sport loses. Prior did not get the key outs. Alex Gonzalez, who was a gold glove caliber shortstop at the time, booted an easy grounder.The Cubs blew the lead in game seven, etc.
   Blaming Bartman is and was the wrong thing to do. Nobody deserves that, and I am a die hard Cubs fan.

Whether or not Alou could have caught the ball is inconsequential.  It was a foul ball and instinctively and justifiably several fans reached for it.  Alou acted like a complete asshole just to take the heat off of himself. 

Also, Bartman should have manned up and even written a book to cash in on the stupidity of fans who are blaming the wrong person for their team's demise.  The Cubs solely were responsible for their own collapse.  As you stated gfinger, if anything, Alex Gonzales is the main reason they fell apart that inning.

 Blaming Bartman is as retarded as blaming Buckner or Norwood for their team's failures.  All 3 had little, if any effect on the overall outcome.  Instead of blaming these 3, here are the real losers that should take major blame for the respective losses:

Alex Gonzalez

Calvin Schiraldi

Coach Marv Levy

I don't think Bills fans ever blamed Norwood for that loss
What lost that game was Otis Anderson.If I remember right,it seemed like the Bills always moved the ball really well when they had it.They just never had it that much.

The Red Sox blaming Buckner is the worst,the game was already tied,so even if he makes that play, all that happens is they go to the top of the next inning.

Red Sox were up 2-0 in that series going back home,all they had to do was take 2 of 3 at Fenway.

 Great point.  Also some real good friends Bartman had at the game with him.  I didn't see them say one word to him and even pretended to not know him.  The security guard I believe said they tried to contact the friends after they took Bartman away but they couldn't get in touch with them and that they had left without him.  Hahahahaha

If the ball was hit 1 foot to the right of Bartman it would be the other shmuck sitting next to him that would be blamed.  He went for the ball too

This story is soo played out.

Bartman made an error in judgement by reaching over to catch the ball. Would others have made the same mistake, ofcourse.

However, there are people in this world who have great situational awareness and certainly would not have made the same mistake Bartman did.

And for the love of god, WE ALL KNOW ALEX GONZALEZ BOOTED THE DOUBLE PLAY BALL. People bring this up like is some mystery and we all forgot it happened. WE KNOW.

Bartman was not the only reason the cubs lost that game, but he did play a part.

The only reason why we talk about Bartman is because of the way Alou reacted.  If Alou calmly walks back to his position, it's a non-issue.

The biggest play in Super Bowl 25 outside of Norwood's miss was the Bills non-touchdown on the safety that made the score 12-3.  If the Bills recover that fumble for a TD, they go up 17-3 and the Giants ditch their game plan.  Instead, the Bills muff that play and could never put the Giants away.
